August 7, 200917 yr If I'm not mistaken, the Briar Jumpers are the only one of its kind in the nation. That's correct. You don't know how many times I had to explain where the nickname came from over the years. I use some form of it for most of my email addresses and such.
August 7, 200917 yr It amazes me that they could go the entire article and not mention the Bowling Green Purples. Bowling Green has two unique ones for the state, as no one else shares the mascot with the Greenwood Gators.

I would think there would be other "Tornadoes" across the country, especially in the plains. I don't know about Blue Tornado, though.

August 7, 200917 yr I think it is short sighted to suggest that because a school has a common nickname that there wasn't any thought behind the selection of the name. For example Apollo High School opened it's door in the fall of 1969, just after Apollo 11 landed on the moon. It is named after the Apollo space program and it's mascot of Eagles is after the lunar module that was apart of Apollo 11.

August 7, 200917 yr Greenup County's mascot, (the Musketeer), is rather unique. Granted, Xavier University has the same mascot, but I do not know of any other high school who shares it. The reason behind this pick is kind of neat as well. When Greenup County was opened, it consolidated 3 area high schools (Mckell, Greenup, and Wurtland). The Musketeer was chosen to represent the 3 schools coming together as 1, just as the Three Musketeers believed "All for one and one for all". (Of course, we all know how well that works, lol.) There was a sign next to the road entrance of the parking lot that had 3 Musketeers on it. If you looked close enough, you could make out writing on the belt buckles of the characters. One had a W, one a M, and one a G, giving a nod to the 3 closed school districts that make up Greenup County's district.
August 8, 200917 yr I would trade the word Panthers for anything. It was that when my grandfather was in school in the 30s and 40s and I think even before that. I will have to check it out. Some schools I know have changed their mascot over time. I think Fleming County Panthers was something different before the 50s.
August 8, 200917 yr If memory serves the Musketeers made a USA poll/article as a top mascot. Reason - the consolidation. Great mascot, I just wish they would do more with it. I know it is far fetched but I would love to see a Musketeer ride across the football field much like the UVA cavalier. Oh well, one can dream.

(Probably on purpose) I have two programs in VA I loathe: Salem and Richlands. Both for about the same thing. Extra help at home. :irked:
