August 8, 200917 yr Lots of Tornado mascots. At least two others which are blue. The McCallie School Blue Tornados, Chattanogga, TN Richlands High School Blue Tornados, Richlands, VA Yep I was going to mention Richlands. Being from Pike County (bordering Buchanon and Dickenson counties in VA) and my father being from Virginia I am very familiar with a lot of the Southwest Virginia places/schools. Some unique names off the top of my head out of this part of Virginia are, as mentioned Richlands Blue Tornadoes, the Grundy Golden Wave, Clintwood Green Wave, Council Cobras, and I am wanting to say that Grahm Va. and Bluefield WV have unusual mascots as well but I am not sure.

August 8, 200917 yr Author I think it is short sighted to suggest that because a school has a common nickname that there wasn't any thought behind the selection of the name. For example Apollo High School opened it's door in the fall of 1969, just after Apollo 11 landed on the moon. It is named after the Apollo space program and it's mascot of Eagles is after the lunar module that was apart of Apollo 11. That's one. I'm betting the others didn't put anywhere near that thought to it.

August 8, 200917 yr Greenup County's mascot, (the Musketeer), is rather unique. Granted, Xavier University has the same mascot, but I do not know of any other high school who shares it. The reason behind this pick is kind of neat as well. When Greenup County was opened, it consolidated 3 area high schools (Mckell, Greenup, and Wurtland). The Musketeer was chosen to represent the 3 schools coming together as 1, just as the Three Musketeers believed "All for one and one for all". (Of course, we all know how well that works, lol.) There was a sign next to the road entrance of the parking lot that had 3 Musketeers on it. If you looked close enough, you could make out writing on the belt buckles of the characters. One had a W, one a M, and one a G, giving a nod to the 3 closed school districts that make up Greenup County's district. Too bad those 3 school districts never seemed to come together, and have that "One for all, and all for one!" attitude.

August 8, 200917 yr If memory serves the Musketeers made a USA poll/article as a top mascot. Reason - the consolidation. Great mascot, I just wish they would do more with it. I know it is far fetched but I would love to see a Musketeer ride across the football field much like the UVA cavalier. Oh well, one can dream. I agree on the need to do something more with the mascot. I remember in the mid 90's there were three students who dressed as Musketeers for home basketball games. It seemed to really pump up the crowd. I would love to see them do that again.
