July 7, 200917 yr Oh really? Because they haven't been healthy all season and they've been in the race all year. Yes really, barring a deal for very good right handed bat they aren't contending for the playoffs. You can use the excuse that they would have if they would have won Friday, but it doesn't change the fact that they aren't good offensively and it's killing them to send Arroyo out every 5 days. If Volquez was healthy I guarantee Arroyo would have been on the DL at least 2 weeks ago. The loss was brutal and a win might have kept them in it a week longer, but they were not going to contend all summer.

They are in contention currently because of the pitching staff, and will either remain or fall out of contention dependent upon the pitching staff success. I think that Cueto will rebound, Harang will hopefully stop the bleeding tonight, Bailey is more promising than he's ever been, and when you add Volquez back to the fold (if he's truly healthy) and Owings pitches at a .500 clip, they'll remain in contention. If not, we will have another late summer in Cincy hopeful that Sept. callups pan out for next year. I think that you're right that Arroyo may end up on the DL, or at the least I hope relegated to coming out of the pen.

I'm not sure they would win it, but they would contend. It's easy to look at where the Reds are and say if it weren't for that loss Friday night.....but the real reason they are starting to slip a little is b/c Arroyo has to pitch and Volquez is out. If Volquez was healthy they could deal w/ Homer learning as he goes, as is they have Owings as their 3rd most reliable pitcher. That isn't good and it has nothing to do w/ Firday's blown lead.

Dusty Baker lost Friday night's game and he never toed the rubber. I agree it'd be nice to add a right handed bat. But I think that we will be late players at the deadline if at all. Walt will want to keep the purse strings closed until this stretch ends or continues to more accurately evaluate if the Reds are still in it or not. And I would guess that the addition won't be a blockbuster by any stretch considering what's out there and I highly doubt that we will send much out of our farm system of any real value for a rent a bat.
July 7, 200917 yr Just for guessing purposes, but how many games will the Reds play before they score 22 runs? My guess is 7

One bat like Jermaine Dye isn't going to make them contenders. Right now they are only in the race because the whole Central Division has basically played .500 baseball all year. The only way they contend is if that continues.......

July 7, 200917 yr I feel like everyone is jumping off the cliff right now. When all this went down in the past few years I felt everyone was pretty much in agreement that 2010 would really be the telling year. I think hovering around .500 this year is about right where this team should be and is on pace for playoffs hopes in 2010..... With that said awesome job by Harang to get out of that.
