Many times a club can look back at their season and pick out a couple of pivotal games or series that defined their season good or bad. This past weekend is one of those instances. The team was poised to make a run at the division leaders going into the break, literally had that in their hands Fri. night, and gave it away. Don't see how anyone doesn't get that.

Exactly, it's not that hard to understand

I agree that it's a tough loss, but I agree w/ Westsider that just b/c they aren't going to compete for the division you can blame it on that loss. The fact that Volquez isn't healthy along w/ Arroyo pitching w/ an arm problem is more to blame. Add that to the fact that the offense isn't good anyway and you have a recipe for falling out of contention. The Reds weren't contending this year unless they stayed relatively healthy. It will catch up to them in the next month, but not b/c they lost Friday.

In this case, all year means half a season ... a lot of teams hang in for a while, then fall out of the race, for all kinds of reasons.

 

And let's be honest ... none of the NL Central contenders are all that great, and none of them have been very healthy. The Cubs, Brewers and Cardinals have also had key players out for long stretches of time.

This team has had to scrap all season to score runs and stay in the race and all it would take would be stretch where they lose 8 of 10 while one other team gets hot to put them out of contention for the year. I'm sure I just missed it, but what arm issue is Arroyo dealing with? The guy has been a human batting tee for much of this year and his salary (in return for what we're getting from him) hurts. I wish the Reds could find someone to take him and his salary off their hands in exchange for a couple of prospects, but doubt it's going to happen.

Gotcha. But I thought he has said it doesn't affect his pitching at all and was something he's dealt with off and on for 4-5 years. If he's trying to pitch his way through an injury/pain, he's really not doing the Reds any favor. Applaud the effort, but he hurts them almost every time he takes the mound these days.
