They expended so much energy today that it could be ugly! But awesome job today, grit, fight determination. I am thrilled!!!
June 24, 200917 yr I don't think we can say enough about the strength of the defense today. Tim Howard is, of course, awesome. But Onyewu and the others playing back has some huge stops. It seemed like Onyewu was getting a clear every 30 seconds. He was huge in the box.
June 24, 200917 yr Biggest win in US soccer history?? I say yes. I think there's only one bigger... The 1950 win over England (1-0) in the World Cup in Brazil. The people in England thought the telegram had a typo, assuming the English team had won 10-1. Ironically, that U.S. team was coming off a 3-1 loss to Spain four days earlier. They would go on to lose to Chile later that week, failing to qualify for the final four. As for some other possibilities... The other win over a #1, Brazil, in the Gold Cup in 1998 was big, but this competition is probably a little more highly regarded than the Gold Cup. To tell you how much soccer in the U.S. has grown, there were just a little over 12,000 in the L.A. Memorial Coliseum on that day. Beating Trinidad & Tobago to get to the 1990 World Cup (after forty years away) was very big for the sport in America, but didn't signify much on the world stage. The wins over Portugal and Mexico in the 2002 World Cup were also big, but neither of those teams were held in the same esteem as this Spanish team, and neither were on a stretch of success that Spain was. Remember, this Spanish team was 32-0-3 in their last 35!
June 24, 200917 yr I don't think it can qualify with the win over England in 1950 or the win over Mexico to get to the quarters in 2002 simply because today's game didn't happen in the World Cup. I'd put it right there with the 1998 win over Brazil in the Gold Cup. Although, you may be able to say biggest simply because this game will get more press than the 1998 win and certainly more than the 1950 game probably got.
June 24, 200917 yr Bradley's red card was a horrible call. As for the win ... "Wow" is all I can say. It isn't often that the USA beats the world's top-rated team in any venue.

June 25, 200917 yr Didn't get to watch all the game because I was at work, but wow! We are riding some major momentum. Silver and a win over Spain and its 34 game match streak is pretty sweet, but if we can get the Gold Sunday, then oh my.
June 25, 200917 yr Many were calling this Spanish team similar to the US 1992 Dream Team....I say gigantic win...I hope this momentum can continue to the World Cup.
