Sweet 16 Memories

Brandon Bender dunk off a lob from around half court; it was either the championship or semis in 99'. Also, Ballard beating Scott Co. in the finals the same year after Pudacah T. was robbed a chance to play in the finals by the refs.

Lofton

Middle schooler OJ Mayo putting on show

Pendleton County in the 05' tourney. I swear by it that if they could have got past PRP, then they could have won it all. Their starting 5 was nasty

Here's the story that accompanied the front page pictures - so many different plot lines besides the non-goaltending call. Charles Hurt dropping a shot at the buzzer in regulation after a length of the court pass (foreshadowing Christian Laettner 13 years later - some of us Holmes/UK followers have to live with that play x2); the fact that Doug Schloemer's brother had lost in the last seconds of the 67 final.

Maybe every team that loses a state tournament final has this kind of woulda-coulda-shoulda, but to us from Covington, it still seems like we were cosmically unlucky, even 30 years later.

That was George and yes to think one family had to live through two such games. Then of course Dr. George Schloemer (CovCath 67) and Lawyer Doug Schlomer were more than just Basketball players. Both were outstanding students and used there College Scholarships to their advantage, to better the lives for themselves and their familes.... Both were and are outstanding men.

2004. Dewalt. The Dunk.

Impressive in any level of basketball.

I've been the past 11 years, so I'll pick what's most memorable from each year:

1998 - Rick Jones' shot vs. Lexington Catholic

1999 - Paducah Tilghman gets screwed

2000 - 4th Quarter of E-town vs. Russellville

2001 - South Laurel falling short to Male / Robert Madison

2002 - Christian Co. hitting a 60-footer going into the half against Male

2003 - The OJ Mayo show in Rupp / Lofton's 9 threes in the Championship

2004 - Chris Lofton playing 4 total overtimes on Friday and Saturday / Dewalt's dunks

2005 - PRP's thrillers vs. Pendleton Co., Ballard, and South Laurel

2006 - Graves County upends South Laurel

2007 - Elliott County debuts / Mackey in the 4th of the finals

2008 - Paintsville upsets J-town / Scotty Hopson

Very nice list. This will make my 10 year

I heard Hopson didn't do much

Rick Jones and AW Hamilton when Scott County beat I believe it was Mason County. It was in the late 90's and it is one of my favorite state tourny games but I was a little younger and it seems fuzzy of what year it occurred. I will never forget Rick Jones standing on the table when he hit that shot at the buzzer.

That was against Lex. Catholic.

One of my favorite memories, and the thing I miss most, was the voice of PA man John Tong.....especially loved: "Goooaaal byyy Billy Bob Hardy" (Pulaski Co. '86) and "Goooaaal byyy Jimmy John Owens" (Wayne Co. '89)......or how about "Theeee foul was on Houston, his third....aaaaatttt the liiiine...Farmer...and he will have....two."

John Tong was the best. :notworthy:

Does any body have video of this or any of these dunks being mentioned. I haven't ever seen.

Try youtube. I've watched plently from the 04 Warren Cent. team on there
If a picture's worth a thousand words, here's 2K worth:

Very sad to see these pictures. What a rip off. KET KY just showed part of the clip, however they didn't follow through with the whole play.

The Dewalt dunk is the final one on the video.

1. Shot by Paul Andrews for Laurel Co. I had a seat next to Joe Hall about 2 rows behind LaurelCounty bench I bought outside before the game for real deal. Awsome!

2. Rick Jones shot vs Lex. Cat. unreal!

3. The performance of Richie Farmer vs the entire Ballard team (it seemed like) at Freedom Hall hard to describe!

The last two are very impressive.

I remember watching the PRP-South Laurel game from about 20 rows up in the endzone where Walt Allen made that final lay up. I remember just sitting there scratching my head right after it happened trying to contemplate everything that had happened in those last few seconds. It seems that some PRP players celebrated a little too early, and that was how Allen got the lay in. I thought sure that Spillman and Jazz Neal were going to take it back to PRP that year the way they were playing...

Didn't Lofton play a 3 OT game on Saturday morning during the year that Warren Central won it? Seems like they played Trinity and they had 2 brothers that were really good. I'm thinking that Trinity looked to have it wrapped up a couple times and that Lofton hit 2 threes in about the last 20 seconds to send it into one of the OT's....
