Sweet 16 Memories

2004. Dewalt. The Dunk.

Yup, this one is burned in my memory.

The 2005 tourney had some great stuff. Ballard-PRP with Spillman's hop-shot, and the wild finish of the PRP-South Laurel game.

1967 State Finals when CovCath lost on a last second shot.

1968 What a thrill it was to sit on the bench as a member of the CovCath team that year, when we played in the Sweet Sixteen at Freedom Hall. I can still remember just looking up into the stands and seeing all those people looking down on us, and how lucky I feft to be part of the team. I still get goose bumps to this day from the memories of that event, and when I attend the Sweet Sixteen today, I look into the faces of the kids on the bench to see how excited they are just to be a part of it.....

Telling your age... I was at that tourney. My momories are of Lee Co beating Danville, after being a 18 point underdog and winning by 18. They then beat GRC by 4. Saturday morning they are playing Seneca. John Paul Gabbard 5'4 goes to the line for a 1+1...he missed the shot and they go into OT. Lee Co loses in the OT.

Also another memory is my husband and I had our first date at the state tourney in 1970.

:thumb:

Another one is Rick Jones' "shot heard 'round Kentucky" in 1998 against Lexington Catholic.

My most favorite was the 'real' shot heard around Kentucky was the 1982 state title game. With 2.1 seconds remaining, tied at 51 with tournament favorite North Hardin, Laurel County guard Paul Andrews steals the inbounds pass just past midcourt, and launches a half court shot to win the state title. I have never heard Rupp go that silent when he let it go then explode a full 1-2 seconds after it went thru the net like that. It was unbelievable. I also remember earlier that day, Paul hitting 2 free throws to send Todd May's Virgie squad home in the semis. :thumb:

My next favorite would be the Farmer/Houston battle.

After that the wild finish in the PRP - South Laurel 2005 semi final game and South going on to win the title.

My least favorite was the PRP - Wayne County game. Really thought Coach Woods' squad got jobbed when the PRP guard pushed off and made the game winning shot. It was a terrific shot, but he still pushed off blatantly. I was furious.

Still a sore spot in Radcliff, of course … :D

Yes. That one ripped Coach Bevers heart out, I am sure.

I remember to this day, taking a security guard out so that Paul Andrews dad Richard could get to the floor and celebrate with his son. I almost went to jail over that one, but luckily, the guard was pretty cool about it when we explained why we did it!

Tyler Maynard's shot against Mason County in the first round of state last year from the first "R" in Rupp Arena to either tie, or put them (EC) in the lead, that was a great play, the entire crowd that was neutral had gotten behind the Lions and Rupp exploded as if Meeks had hit a three against Florida or Tennessee. Also, Arrez Henderson's tip dunk in the fourth quarter to cut the lead to 6 (I think) in the State title last year were two of the better plays of last year's tournament.

Good plays, maybe, but we all know the outcomes of those particular games. Mason County Royal Victories!!!

Married "The Boss" in October of 1970 and indeed we went to the State Tourney in 1970 too.... Knew she was the one when she didn't complain about going to the Sweet Sixteen (Ohio girl:idunno:), nor attending all the baseball games that I played in back then.... :thumb: To this day, while she doesn't go with me all that much anymore, she is still a good sport about all the games I do attend.

Mine would have to be the Paul Andrews half court shot that won the 1982 tournament for Laurel County. That was the loudest I've ever heard Rupp during a state tournament.

Haha, I knew someone would bring that up, but to be honest, Setty had too many big shots to list them all. I thought he should have been Trevor, not Darius.

The no goal tending call by Charles Hurt of Shelby Co. in 1978 against Holmes is the most vivid memory.

One play that stands out for me is the Nathan Myrick timeout at the end of the St. Henry first round game in 2003. Should this have been a traveling violation? Maybe. But in the end, I feel this play was the catalyst that was responsible for waking up a Sleeping Giant in Royals that year. Oh, I forgot, Lofton in the finals was also unforgettable.

1. 1983: State finals, Lex. Henry Clay 35 Carlisle County 33

2. 1988 Clay County vs. Lou. Ballard, Richie Farmer, Allan Houston
