1967 State Finals when CovCath lost on a last second shot.

 

1968 What a thrill it was to sit on the bench as a member of the CovCath team that year, when we played in the Sweet Sixteen at Freedom Hall. I can still remember just looking up into the stands and seeing all those people looking down on us, and how lucky I feft to be part of the team. I still get goose bumps to this day from the memories of that event, and when I attend the Sweet Sixteen today, I look into the faces of the kids on the bench to see how excited they are just to be a part of it.....

Paul Andrews' shot to win the '82 title. The '83 final between a loaded Henry Clay squad and the Tyler brothers and Carlisle Co. The '85 tournament, that year I fell in love with the boys from Clay County, and felt really bad for them and their fans when they were defeated by Hoptown. I can't remember the exact year, or his exact name, but it was Bryan Station, and I believe Michael Allen, if I remember correctly he had three opportunities from the three point line to win a game and nailed the final shot. '95 Breck, they were a machine and one of the best I've seen play as a team. Barbour's final performance against LexCath, I didn't see the semi's but I paid $25/ticket for that final. Lofton's 39 points against Ballard and many more but these really stick out.

Worst memory has to be the goal tend in 1978.:irked:

Sure it was.... and you may ask why, but how many teams have come that close to winning the whole show? Sure it was disappointing and it will be forever that way but consider that at least we made it that far, how many teams never make it to the final game of the year? Also you have to consider the fun we had except for that last night, you just can't forget the entire season/year but for one game.

What happened?

 

In the Ballard-PRP game, JuJuan Spillman made this goofy hop-step move that looked a lot like a walk, and tossed up a buzzer-beater to knock out the Bruins in 2OT.

 

In the SL-PRP game, it was just a wild, breakneck pace in the OT, with great individual plays on both sides. SL won on a spinning layup in the lane by Walt Allen. (I think I'm remembering this sequence correctly; someone please correct me if I'm wrong.) Spillman hit a big bucket to put PRP up, then got a steal at the other end, only to have it stolen back away from him by Ty Proffitt. I've heard a lot of people say it was the best Sweet 16 game they had ever seen.

 

The Panthers played four OT periods in three games in the tourney, winning their first-round game over a very good Pendleton Co. squad.

Remember that well. I loved to watch Billy Ray play.

1. In 1996 second round game Cunnigham from Allen Co.-Scottsville hits a leaning 3 pointer to tie the game with only secongs to spare against Paintsville. Sophmore JR Vanhoose steps out of bounds and hurls a baseball pass the length of the floor to a streaking Todd Tackett for the game winning layup as time expired. Any other sophmore in the state would have called a timeout there.

 

2. I can't recall for sure but I think it was 1995 when Marshall Co. led by Dan Langi (sp) took on St. X in the second round. Dan Langi put on a show to get the win, but the ST. X crowd was one of the best I have ever seen (along with the Cov. Cath. crowds of recent years). They really knew how to have a good time.

 

3. In 1999 the semi-final game between Scott Co. & Pad. Tilghman. The Tornado's had controlled the game the entire time and then Scott Humprey was whistled for what looked like over the back. The ref called the fould on Tilghman and kept Humphrey from fouling out. It was the first time at a state tournament that I can remember the entire crowd (outside of Scott Co. fans) booing an official. The announcer even asked them to stop.

 

4. Chris Lofton's insane night against Ballard in the state championship.

 

5. Rick Jones being Rick Jones through pretty much the whole tournament.

 

Just a few off the top of my head.

My favorite memory was the Clay Co vs. Ballard final in 1988 where Allan Houston and Richie Farmer put on a scoring clinic.

 

Also I thought the Graves Co win over South Laurel a few years ago was a great game. Graves had a 6' kid who ran the baseline the entire game against SL's 1-3-1 and scored a bunch. He ended up getting the game winner with less than 6 seconds left. Awesome game.

Here's the story that accompanied the front page pictures - so many different plot lines besides the non-goaltending call. Charles Hurt dropping a shot at the buzzer in regulation after a length of the court pass (foreshadowing Christian Laettner 13 years later - some of us Holmes/UK followers have to live with that play x2); the fact that Doug Schloemer's brother had lost in the last seconds of the 67 final.

 

Maybe every team that loses a state tournament final has this kind of woulda-coulda-shoulda, but to us from Covington, it still seems like we were cosmically unlucky, even 30 years later.

Yeah. :thumb: That was a good one. That game brings to mind a couple more goose-bumpy games I recall in recent years. It was really moving when Walt Allen lead the after game prayer on the court after SL's tough loss. The fans were frozen in stance. 2006 I believe.

 

Another one was when Tyler Hicks kissed the floor after fouling out in an overtime semi-final loss to eventual runner-up Mason County who just came off of a thrilling double-overtime win against Trinity to eventually lose to Sweet 16 Champions Warren Central. Tyler had just played his guts out and when he fouled out he knew instantly that his H.S. career was through. :cry:

This was 2004 and also Lofton's senior year.

 

There's so many great memories. Too many to note. I'm just pumped knowing that starting Wednesday more great memories are on tap. :thumb:

Mine would have to be the Paul Andrews half court shot that won the 1982 tournament for Laurel County. That was the loudest I've ever heard Rupp during a state tournament.
