How far will Russell stoop to try and win an Academic competition?

Featured Replies

I agree mcpapa. I hope he realizes that Russell's integrity took a huge hit on this one.

OK, I'm going to give it to you as straight as it can be ! Russell's students had no knowledge of the smoke screen thrown up by their coach. The coach did this on his own. He was told well in advance by the student that she could not be present. He choose to try deception. The person in charge of the busses had no knowledge of the coaches intent. In fact he had already approved two other busses or vans for earlier that same morning. This "coach" was brought to Russell by his very good friend, Dr. Compton, the superintendent. I can't prove that she had prior knowledge of his plan, but I do suspect she was aware of his intent. I'm sure the coach will be sacrificed , but it really should go higher than that.

Sounds like Martstone has the real scoop. It a shame really. Sounds like the personal glory of the coach may have been the motive to deceive those involved, including his remaining team. Sad.

Thanks for the update martstone. I don't think anyone ever thought any of the students were behind this ordeal. As this case seems to prove, it's usually the so called adults that are the ones making the mess, and it's certainly even more pathetic if it goes all the way to the top of the school system.

Thanks for your candor. That is about what I thought, I never thought anything ill toward the kids, I am sure all they wanted was to compete and win. But, like LRCW said, it is normally the adults that mess things up.

Well in this case this man is not a true Russell anything. He is NOT from Russell and did not realize the importance of the integrity or credibility that has been built over the years. They had a very good team and could have won without that girl. OR him for that matter ! They have done very well without him for years and so far all he has done for the team and the system is give them a black eye. I would love to tell all but it would be unfair to some innocent people and students. I will try to update, pressed for time now.

I am wondering out loud on this, but I know from school board members (past and present) that the Russell system as a whole is not happy with the current superintendant. Does anyone have an opinion as to if this is going to be a chance for the powers that be to maybe try and stage a coup? If she had knowledge of this plan and is responsible for bringing the coach in, she should be held even more accountable than the academic coach. Jmo.

I would also like to add that none of my previous posts meant to incriminate a student. I think everyone knows there is no way a student could ever have that much authority over an academic meet.

So true! It will be interesting to see the outcome. I agree that most of the kids should not be penalized, however the child who was on a college visit should not be able to compete IMO.

You can get the "official" outcome, watch the 6 pm news. Randy Yohey was at the school today. If what is reported is inadequate I may be able to expound later.(I'm walking on thin ice here people).

Thanks for walking! :walk:

The Board meeting I alluded to went into closed session and the attendee I know had to leave. Martstone is correct- Russell has had a top notch Academic Team for years, but as someone who went to both Russell and Raceland I've have sat on both sides of the table and I think it boils down to Russell's enrichment program. Russell puts a very high emphasis on academics and they have one of the better enrichment programs in the state, thus they cultivate more quality academic team members. When I got to Raceland there was no Enrichment program at all and only two "AP Classes" (Calculus and Physics). I had gone through Enrichment at Russell and it really goes way above and beyond what I got in high school at Raceland- especially in Humanities so I think Russell's feeder system, if you will, is a lot stronger than other area schools.

Plus Russell has numbers. Unlike football that classes schools by size we were in the same district as Boyd, Russell, and Ashland and they had no problem filling the team. My Junior and Senior years at Raceland we were just looking for warm bodies at times and even though we worked just as hard, practiced just as much, and at times had just as smart of people (just fewer of them) we never came close to beating Russell because they were too deep. Not once did we remotely come close to them. I used to take the Social Studies test and placed in the Top 3 at nearly every meet except when we went against Russell.

In Quick Recall my junior year we were getting beat so badly we decided to try and make them laugh because we had never seen them smile, let alone laugh. So we would buzz in every so often and answer something completely wrong but they never laughed or showed emotion of any kind. That's why all the other schools always referred to them as the Russell Robots. But hey they were, and still are, the kings of the state in Academics Team competition.

I was captain of my academic team at Sheldon Clark for 2 years, and we met Russel very often in quick recall competition. We only beat them one time. they had this kid named Brandon Fyffe from Lawrence County who transferred there and he was a really good player. We beat them when I was a Junior, and after the match Colonel Burgess (Is he still there?) took me aside and subtly inquired about where I wanted to attend high school the next year. It was fishy, but I always liked the Colonel myself.

According to Ch 27 news tonight the academic coach at Russell has been suspended until the investigation is completed.

I saw that on channel 3 this evening. His punishment could be as severe as a life time ban from coaching and the players being disqualified.

Thanks for the info martstone, from the report on WSAZ news this evening that sounds about right. They (wsaz) reported that the teacher/coach would be suspended and they interviewed the superintendent.

RUSSELL, Ky. (WSAZ) -- Russell Independent School’s superintendent has suspended Russell High’s academic coach while he’s under local and state investigation.
