No different than any other team competition. In football or basketball if you played an inelligible player or got caught cheating the whole team would suffer for it, just a part of life these kids will have to deal with. Sad for them, but as in everything else in life be it sports or business one person cheats everyone is at risk for the consequences.

As you now know, one was thrown under the bus, one ,I suspect has been swept under the rug, and all the kids got hosed. The really sad thing is it has been discovered that they had enough points to win WITHOUT the written competition. They didn't even need it. This was very unfair for the kids that worked so hard to compete. I know some will be glad this punishment was handed down, but please direct your disdain toward the person or persons responsible for the cheating. Also remember that the Russell kids still had the winning score although it won't count. These students are still winners in my book, it is the adult(s) that should be considered losers.

Tell that to Indiana's basketball team. None of the kids there were involved in the cheating that last year's coach took part in. Yet they are all suffering for it. What happens in football, baseball, or basketball if a Coach decides to use a player that by rule shouldn't have been available to them? That's right, the TEAM forfeits any games that player was involved in. Is it fair for the other players? Probably not, but with all the teams out there and so few officials it puts the onus on each individual program to be sure that their coach will play within the rules. You can bet that when one of those coaches decides to step outside the rules then their competitors will call them on it. I do feel sorry for the Russell kids but it was incumbent on their administration to hire a coach that would follow the rules. They didn't and their program deserves to suffer the consequences. It certainly isn't the fault of the other teams in their region that the Russell coach decided to step outside of the rules.

I'm pretty sure that everyone of the schools were pretty upset about the situation, especially those schools who put their students up in hotel rooms the night before.

It is my understanding they did not count Russell's scores in 5 of the 8 events and they still had enough points to win region. If this is true Russell is the best cheaters I have ever heard of or they really did not need the one student to win. I can also understand why the other teams would feel as helpless as they do. If I got beat playing 8 on 3, I would be frustrated.

:thumb: Good post, if aything positive comes out of the students have now realized that a liar and a cheater (Russell teacher) hurts everyone over their own stupid and selfish acts. All pay for it and regardless if anyone thinks that it is right or not that is the way it is, always has been and will continue to be.

Should Russell had not been penalized then imo that sends a message to the kids something like "so, he cheated.....big deal, we still get to go on and there is no consequences for us".

The students can still compete for individual awards. Just not for team awards.

Your understanding is correct. All the comparisons to ballgames is absurd.IMO It's not a ball game, it is more like a Chess team playing several matches at the same time.They deserve sanctions for what HE did, but there were no players from Russell that cheated. The event in question would not have counted toward what the other players had already competed in, just the overall points. The event in question, the coach, and any event the missing student was to have competed in should have been the only things disqualified. All costs incurred by the other schools should be reimbursed. The events the other students were in should stand. I'm sure some of you will still say "kill em all and let God sort em out" and your headline would read "Russell kids caught cheating". Just remember, Russell's kids still had the highest score, it was the coach that got the F.:thumb:
