How far will Russell stoop to try and win an Academic competition?

Featured Replies

Packed board meeting where?

I'm guessing the Russell School Board. It could be that some of the residents of Russell don't approve of the actions taken by those in charge of the academic team. Russell could really save some face by policing this themselves. IMO, that would include removing the team from state competition and replacing the coach and anyone else involved in this, if all of this is proved to be true.

As the parent of a child who participated in academic meets for 10 years, I've seen a lot. This is pretty low, if the article is accurate.

My favorite was regarding a student who shall remain nameless from a school that shall remain nameless. Said student had an extremely long name - four names, to be exact - two middle names, I guess. This person could buzz in before anyone else and compose the answer to the question while the referee was saying the student's name and school.

Having past experience in these competitions, I must agree. Teams will pull almost anything to get an edge. I feel that a large part of this comes from the following: If you want to compete on a high level in these competitions, or even high academics as a whole, you have to bring in experts from the community. They have expertise, but dont always abide by the rules that educators would go by. Is this a positive for education ? Most definitely yes, but it does bring other issues into play. It tends to lead to win at all cost.

I am not saying Russell is guilty. But I have seen similar manipulations in the past, by several academic teams. It is a difficult situation to reign in, because of the positive impact these wildcards bring to the system.

I would just hope, that if they are guilty, people would not judge their education system by this same possible flaw that we all play by. They should have the opportunity to fix it.

Even more so, dont judge on the complaints of others until they are proven.

This being said, Russells capabilty of educating top students is bar none, at the top of the state.

Any word on the results of the Board meeting with regards to this thread?

I have always respected Russell's academic's .........untill now . This article explains alot about their "excellence". JMO

This was a pitiful situation. I can't believe that Russell would even be able to participate when the remainder of the event is continued. I am not saying this because it is Russell, but anyone who tried this kind of crap, to hold up an event for multiple schools, after the event had been scheduled for a long time, should be disqualified. Bush league at its finest, pure and simple.

This follow up, gives the allegations a lot of validity:

Academic coaches call for probe

7 schools file complaints following Saturday’s Governor’s Cup

By MIKE JAMES - The Independent

RUSSELL — Seven schools have filed complaints and at least one academic coach is calling for Russell’s academic team to be disqualified from state Governor’s Cup competition following a dispute over last Saturday’s high school regional match.

“At this point in time I think their kids should be disqualified,” said Paul G. Blazer High School Academic Coach Dan Boyer.

Boyer has written a scathing letter to the Kentucky Association for Academic Competition, which he provided to The Independent.

In it he accuses Russell coach Matt Knupp of manipulating a rule “to benefit an individual student and, by extension, his entire team.”

As a parent of a child who plays sports and is on the academic team as well, I can tell you that people can complain about referees in basketball and football all they want, but there is more questionable activity that goes on at academic meets then any other extracurricular activity. Some of these things are just sad.

And again, I'll say that their academic excellence has nothing to do with the meet. No matter how you feel about the goings on or the disdain for the neighbor.

I have never attended an academic competition (sadly), however I have been to many athletic competitions over the years. Never once was any school given preferential treatment due to inclement weather (especially if it didnt exist). If you were not there to compete, you were out. My daughter has been in school volleyball tournments where teams from all over the state come (and in club where teams were from all over the country). Two years ago, one school had a bus catch on fire enroute and they all still made it!

I dont understand why Russell was even given the OPPORTUNITY to manipulate an entire competition. Whoever agreed to that, especially with perfect weather outside would have some explaining to do.

I agree with your post. I think people are missing the point here. Russell will still have excellence academics because of the teachers and programs they have in place not because the academic team supposedly did what was reported in the paper.

I dont think anyone is missing the point. No one challenged Russell's academic excellence. The thread is about possible inappropriate tactics used by the coach of the team. If this is true, Russell will not suffer due to academic issues, but may sustain a black eye for lying and cheating.

Here is another article in todays Independent that will shed more light and gives views from others in the competition that would be in the know. Should all of this be what it seems to be then I certainly hope these coaches are sucsessful in their request. JMO.

This is disturbing, if the allegations are true then the academic coach not only tried to cheat the other schools, but in my opinion, cheated the rest of the Russell Team. It is always disheartening, in any competition, when a coach or someone in authority acts as if one player or student makes the difference between winning and losing. The other Russell academic team members worked hard to compete in this meet and through the actions of the Coach/school may now be disqualified.

What message does this send to the rest of the team members? That the one is more important than the whole?
