LRCW Posted February 23, 2009 Posted February 23, 2009 I've always had respect for Russell, and the accomplishments of their academic teams, but it looks like they will stoop to all levels to try and gain an advantage. A big controversy arose over the weekend, that had other regional schools all upset, and some wanting to disqualify Russell. Unusual questions were being asked Saturday during the regional Governor’s Cup academic competition at Boyd County High School, although the inquiries and answers weren’t on any student’s test. Danna Powers, Boyd County Academic Team head coach and regional contest manager, said she received a telephone call from the Russell High School Academic Team Friday evening informing her the school’s transportation director had declared no bus travel would be allowed until 11 a.m. Saturday because of concerns about inclement weather. The delay forced regional competition officials to limit Saturday’s contest to quick-recall events and postpone the written assessment portions of the event, Powers said. Based on conversations between coaches and parents in the corridors, the problem wasn’t the weather, however, and the written-test delay was caused by an RHS student who couldn’t be present at Saturday’s tournament. http://www.dailyindependent.com/homepage/local_story_052224311.html
mcpapa Posted February 23, 2009 Posted February 23, 2009 Perhaps the last sentence in the article summed it up best. ’The main aim here is to move on to state,’ Knupp said.
mcpapa Posted February 23, 2009 Posted February 23, 2009 Some might interpret that as "the ends justify the means."

Wireman Posted February 23, 2009 Posted February 23, 2009 The Jack "Frost" is a dangerous individual :thumb:
Beechwoodfan Posted February 23, 2009 Posted February 23, 2009 All the other schools made it there. If there was a weather concern, then they should have gone down the night before. I cant believe they would change the schedule to accommodate one school. I think that Russel should be disqualified. Hope they didnt win.

There was no inclement weather. There was no excuse for this IMO.
The Scribe Posted February 23, 2009 Posted February 23, 2009 If team A leaves a destination at 7:30am and drives at 40 mph on a dry road, and team B leaves a destination at 7:45am and drives at 35 mph on a road that is supposedly slick, but without their top written test student, who should arrive at Boyd County first? Ram Posted February 23, 2009 Posted February 23, 2009 This was a pitiful situation. I can't believe that Russell would even be able to participate when the remainder of the event is continued. I am not saying this because it is Russell, but anyone who tried this kind of crap, to hold up an event for multiple schools, after the event had been scheduled for a long time, should be disqualified. Bush league at its finest, pure and simple.
threetimelover Posted February 23, 2009 Posted February 23, 2009 Russell is only 20 minutes tops from Boyd County. There was no inclement weather. There was no excuse for this IMO. Then why did the "regional competition officials" postpone it in the first place? Could they not look out the window? Did they not drive on the said roads to get there? Something is really foul about the whole situation, IMO.
spindoc Posted February 23, 2009 Posted February 23, 2009 I wonder if there's more to the story than what has been assumed in the paper.
