I sadly think by far U.S.C. is the best team right now. If I had a vote I am voting Utah.

The CLEARLY two best teams this year are Florida and Oklahoma.

Really? The Sagarin Ratings have Oklahoma and Texas at 1 and 2 ...

Anyone that says they know definitively who the best team is this season is dreaming.

 

This year, more than any, is evidence that a playoff is the best way to end the season in college football. Maybe Florida is the best team, maybe Oklahoma is. I don't know definitively and no one really does because there are too many really good and really even teams out there. Throw the top five teams in a hat and play them off 5 times and you may get five different winners each time.

 

The facts are:

1. No one knows who the best team is and anyone that asserts they do is expressing opinion(which they are entitled to do, but it isn't fact).

 

2. Only one FBS team beat everybody put in front of them this year. Ironically, this team has no shot at the title.

 

Again, this system is a joke (I guess this isn't a fact, but it sure feels like one)!

While I think that Oklahoma is the best team in the country, and they may even lose Thursday. It is NOT clear cut. If it were, other teams around the country, and their fans wouldn't be as boisterous as they are. USC can claim a little. Utah has a lot of beef to let air. Texas just as much. IMO, there are five teams that can lay claim to being the best right now. A playoff would at least shut 4 of those up.

Didn't Texas beat Oklahoma this year? Why should they be in the national championship game anymore than the Longhorns should be in it. Both have one loss, but the Oklahoma's L is to Texas.

 

I don't like computers deciding the final two teams. There's always controversy. Maybe allow them to choose the teams for an 8 or 16 team playoff. Although #17 might feel they were over looked, it would still be better than it is now.

 

I am with you on the playoff, but Texas lost to Texas Tech who Oklahoma beat AND was just beaten by Ole Miss in the postseason, AND gave up more points to Ole Miss than the Rebels had scored all year. I am not convinced that the Big 12 teams played much defense this year.

 

The current system got it right this year. However, .... my thoughts are that the current system is flawed, .. big time. WE NEED A PLAYOFF!

This thread shows the obvious problem with college football and the BCS. The BCS supporters say that the system makes for the most compelling regular season in which every game matters but in the end you have one undefeated team (who was part of the BCS games) and they're NOT the national champions. Truth is, we really don't know who the best team is and who should be the national champions.

Want proof that a tournament deminishes the regular season? College hoops has been going for 2 months and is just not becoming relevant...

I have no idea who the mythical national champion is. And believe me whoever wins Thursday is stilll a mythical champion.

I'd be hard pressed to say UF or OU is better than USC.

 

We're NEVER going to see a playoff so the next best solution would be the Plus 1.

I'll disagree with GT who said UT's OOC cost them. What cost them is they lost to TexTech . OU losing to UT is much more palatable than UT losing to TT. That's why they're not in the championship game IMO.

I agree with the BCS supporters that it makes the regular season much more interesting but, how do you explain Utah? Their resume would be as good, or better, than some ACC or Big East teams that could have ran the table and gone undefeated. Besides that, the regular season would still be meaningful because you would have to get into the top 4 or top 8 or whatever the "post season" would be.

This has been a good discussion. My point in starting the thread was to point out that you could make a case for Florida/Oklahoma/USC/Texas/Utah/etc being the "best" team in the country but we all know that the best team doesnt always win. Utah's kids did everything that they were supposed to "on the field" and its just a shame when they dont even have an opportunity to be called champions. I dont know what the answer is but football is based on 1 game series' and anyone(almost) has a chance in that one game. I just hate to see an undefeated team not even have an opportunity. Remember Auburn a few years ago?

The two best teams in the land are in the national title game period....

Like GT said tough if Utah has a prob with it. Utah deserves number two though.

Im also tired of hearing USC is so great, yeah they are good but I think UF and OU would handle them.
