In post 52 I made it a little more clear. I meant that right noe the two best teams are playing, but when one of them loses Utah will be the number two.

I still say that logic is flawed. If you have the two best teams, one is first and one is second. The only question is who gets what slot.

Tell it to Texas Tech who was drilled by Ole Miss. The CLEARLY two best teams this year are Florida and Oklahoma. If you didn't follow it closely enough, sorry...

Now you are willing to drop the second best team in the nation in your opinion (the loser of the NC game) to number 4???

Warning this is a long post. Don't complain, I'm giving my reasons as to why USC is the best team and should have played for the title.

 

Hmm, lets see. USC was beaten on a Thursday night @ Oregon State. They had jumped over Georgia to become the new #1, and everyone was talking about how invincible they were. Coming off a huge win over Ohio State they were a little over confidence and they lossed. Oregon State was 1 and 2, but had they're RB not gotten hurt at the end of the season they would have split with USC for the Pac-10 title and played in the Rose Bowl instead by virtue of a tie.

 

ONE WEEK LATER, the Mighty Media darling Florida Gators, were beaten AT HOME by Ole Miss who was 2-2. After week 5 Oregon State was 3-2, Ole Miss was 3-2. Yes thats Ole Miss who lost to S.Carolina the next week, and Vandy the week before that game. The highlight of the season other than UF (and the bowl which isn't part of the bcs formula since it isn't played before teams are selected) was a win over a very overrated LSU team in the Bayou. In fact their other wins were Memphis, Samford, Arkansas, Auburn, UL-Monroe, and Miss. State. Not exactly the Big 12 south or the Pac-10 to be honest.

 

Two Weeks later the much overrated Longhorns beat the Sooners on a Neutral site, and followed up with a loss to Texas Tech, who was smoked by Oklahoma at the end of the season. By the end of the season OU was probably better than Texas but oh well, BCS is BS and thats how it goes.

 

Utah won every game this season, with wins over Michigan (not good i know, but they were when the game was scheduled this should be taken into effect to a small extent), Oregon State, TCU, and BYU. Not a great schedule, but not horrible either, still though i don't think its enough to get them in, not this season.

 

Also Bama has to be discounted having lost their last game of the season, all they had to do was win their 1 tough game.

 

So out of the Losses that occured to the 4 of the best one loss teams,

 

1. Oklahoma- they lost to a rival at a neutral site. The most forgivable loss of the bunch without question.

2. USC- they lost on the road, on a short week, after playing the most hyped game of the preseason. Who else would have won that game? NO ONE.

3. Texas- Lost to Tech after a brutal schedule.

4. UF-lost at home to and unranked team that finished strong, but didn't have a great record. Easily the worst loss of the bunch I don't care how you slice it. Championship teams shouldn't lose at home to an unranked opponent.

 

Now for those of you who say the SEC is so tough (I was one of them before I started to really break down the stats) take this in to account.

 

For offense the Big 12 has 5 teams in the top 9 for scoring offense, 8 in the top 25, and the lowest ranked offense is Colorado at 101.

 

The SEC mean while has 4 teams below this, and only 4 teams above 50. With Florida at 3 and the next closest at 28 Ole Miss.

 

The Pac-10 is comparable to the SEC in offensive output though with 5 teams in the top 50 with Oregon at 7, USC at 14, Arizona at 16, and Cal at 27. Meaning that USC played in a statistically and TRUTHFULLY better offensive conference.

 

USC gave up 7.75 points per game, including an uncharacteristic 27 in the upset loss. 7 of which were given up by the offense. Also, in their bowl game they gave up 24, while just trying to finish out the clock. They could have beaten PSU by 50, but Pete Carroll is too classy. USC also gave up only 10 points to the nations #7 scoring offense Oregon.

 

We won't even talk about the Big 12 statistics, but they are obviously skewed to some degree with the amount of offense in the conference. The defense isn't that bad especially Texas' and Oklahoma's. I don't feel they have a USC level of defense, or probably even a UF level of defense, but they have good defenses. OU limited Maclin to under 70 total yards (as close to a Harvin clone as there is, only better), Crabtree to 62 yards and no td's. For Texas, they're regarded as the BIG 12's best d for a reason. They held OU to 35 (a better accomplishment then it sounds), and has made some plays. Teams do score on you in the Big 12 though, no matter how good your defense is.

 

 

But, I think UF's defensive is a tad overrated. I do feel that B. Spikes is among the best players in the country and is a tremendous playmaker and Janoris Jenkins is a beast of a frosh CB. But, when you look at their defensive statistics they are inflated. #1 they haven't faced a good offense all season. UGA has some talent and was the best, but still 30 points for them is a good day as they broke it only 5 times this season, including 56 on C.Michigan, 42 on an injured UK, and 45 on Charleston So. Yikes that sounds scary. Also, UF's offensive prowess is good if not great but their biggest days have come on Hawaii, UK, LSU, South Carolina, and the Citadel and were really helped out by the defense and special teams, and no picking off Hartline or Garcia for SC doesn't qualify as crazy defense. Honestly, the only two impressive outputs they've had were Georgia and FSU. The end of the game saw an avalanche in the UGA game and FSU was just overmatched.

 

No team that played was as impressive as USC, especially after their loss, which was the turning point as well for UF and OU. While OU and UF were scoring 56 points a game running up the scores on overmatched and overranked opponents, USC after their loss gave up 56 points total or 6 a game.

 

USC vs. the 3 best offenses they faced statistically gave up 33 points and scored 96 a difference of 63. Or on average 32 to 11.

 

UF vs. the 3 best they faced gave up 61 points and scored 110 a difference of 49 points. Or an Average of 37 to 20.

 

OU vs. the 3 best o's they face gave up gave up 107 points and scored 161 a difference of 54. Or on average 54 to 36.

 

While UF and OU pad their stats the real statistics to pay attention to are in Hollywood. It's clear on the field and on paper that USC is the best in the land and got the shaft in the title. East Coast bias and the SEC's recent success against Ohio State in the Championship has blackballed them. I feel they may have been left out even if they had beaten Oregon State, because they simply don't humiliate anyone with the box score, and rather on the field which isn't seen by many viewers and pollsters due to them being on the West Coast. It's interesting to see how much Ohio State is devauled by the media when it benefits the teams they want to see in the title. The Trojans were the most impressive team this season and it wasn't even close.

 

For their opponent take your pick of OU or Texas. They played a tougher schedule than UF, had to content with better offenses, and underrated defenses. C'mon 24 points beats 9 or 10 teams in the SEC on most days, 24 points will get you beat by Kansas or Missou in the Big 12. I say Oklahoma, they finished stronger, lost in a rivalry game and by the end of the season IMO had a better defense (and offense of course) than Texas.

 

Honestly, Penn State and Utah, and maybe even Bama were as deserving as the Gators. You just cant beat that East Coast/SEC bias, and the fact that Tebow is the most beloved media darling in the history of college football. He could curse your mother, slap a baby, and embezzle from a church and people would still like him. He's a good, border line great player, and the Gates may beat the Sooners, but give me a break. Have can you justify given the facts that they deserve to play for it all in the current B.C.S? You Can't!

 

Ahh, CatsCatsCats is a UF hater from way back, but he makes some Legit Points. I feel USC would run through any of the top 12 teams, including my Gators, their Defense is just amazing. I believe that UF, Utah, USC and Texas all have a legit argument of being #1 in the country. But at the end of the day, the BCS is the system that is in place and we just have to grin and bare it.
