I thought Highlands was suppossed to host Colerain next year as part of the two-year deal the schools agreed to prior to this season. What happened with that? Did Highlands pull out of the contract to add Ryle a second time?

I guess they play schools in KY. to take a break from the Ohio schools?

 

 

Ohio runs their playoffs a lot different than KY. Ohio uses a computerized system (Harbin?) to rank teams and I believe it is the top 8 teams as ranked by that system are the ones that get into the playoffs. The keys to getting ranked highly are playing tough competition and BEATING them. You get more points for beating teams with winning records not only because you beat them but because you get secondary points from all the teams that they beat. So Ohio teams want to find teams with good records that they can beat. Colerain is supposed to be very, very good next year - perhaps top ten in the nation. Good for Manual in scheduling them but it would be even better to see T or X face them. I would make Colerain about a 10 point favorite over T or X.

You were wrong in your understanding. Highlands did not pull out of the game to play Ryle a second time. They had agreed to play in 07 and 08. As for the 07 game, the agreement was that if they both didn't get in the Herbie, they would play one another. When both got in, that "satisfied" their 07 game. And of course, they played this year.

In 2008 Colerain went 9-1 in the regular season losing to Middletown,42-39.

Don't know the exact number, but it was something like that.

 

Colerain will be the best team in Ohio next year. If Spencer Ware does end up there, it will be a triple option attack with a QB that is more than solid in the passing game. If not it's Tabar at QB and Williams and Durham picking up big chunks of yards on the ground. Either way, they are the team to beat in 2009...

 

The 2008 team was loaded with underclassmen. There's no reason for them not to be number 1 next year.

I know from talking to Mueller that there were serious discussions with playing Trinity the next two years, but common open dates couldn't be worked out. I don't know if there were any discussions with X. Also keep in mind that at the time that the schedules were being finalized, gas prices were very high and Mueller had some pressure put on him to avoid a bunch of long travel games (which I think, but wasn't told this by Mueller, how the Beechwood game came about) to keep travel costs low. As folks in N. Ky are aware, Highlands like Beechwood and some other N. Ky schools gets hammered under the SEEK formula and there is not a lot of money laying around in the athletic budget.

 

My guess is that the only week that Highlands could have played Trinity was either the game against Beechwood or one of the two games scheduled against Ryle. Don't know if Trinity had one of those three weeks open and whether they were willing to come to Highlands. We had already committed to play Manual in Louisville and I don't think Dale wanted the expense of another long bus trip to Louisville to play Trinity next year. And with Boone agreeing once again to start playing us again, I'm sure that Dale wasn't going to turn them down (admittedly Boone is not Trinity, and I don't mean that to be an insult to the Boone folks, but it is a traditionally talented football team in our back yard). With Boone having a lot of talent returning next year, they should be very good and a good challenge for the Birds.

Any Manual wins would be secondary points, right? They were 8 - 2 this year in the regular season. Next year Colerain and X would be losses, but Manual should be competitive in their other games and could come out with 6 or 7 wins.

 

I think the big boost would be for beating an Ohio D-1 equalivalent.

LN, I would usually agree with you, but this seems a little silly to say gas prices would keep HHS away from traveling to Louisville. Even if gas were $10 gallon, don't you (and HHS administrators!) think the huge gate would more than offset any additional cost........I'm as big a HHS fan as any, but that would be a totally inappropriate reason not to travel to the Ville to play T if in fact all other logistics could be worked out! You can't be serious!
