November 17, 200817 yr What is the difference? A "pop" song is a specific style of songwriting -- Generally upbeat melodically, very hook-driven. Tend to go with a verse/verse/chorus/verse/chorus formula, maybe with a bridge or an extra repeat of a verse in there somewhere. It got its name because of the style of rock music that first assaulted the top 100 in the first decade of the rock era, 1955-65. John Lennon, Paul McCartney, Brian Wilson (Beach Boys), Alex Chilton (Box Tops, Big Star, that tune in the opening credits of "That '70s Show"), and more recently Paul Westerberg (The Replacements), Ryan Adams (Whiskeytown), Gary Louris (The Jayhawks), Jeff Tweedy (Wilco, Uncle Tupelo) are considered practitioners of the art. "Popular," however, means just that. James Hetfield has written popular Metallica songs that by no means can be considered a "pop song." By the same token, Gary Louris writes masterful pop songs that are sadly overlooked by most people.
November 17, 200817 yr The Rolling Stones IMO. Saw them at Rupp Arena in 1982. I remember paying $50 for a ticket in section 12. Thinking if my Dad finds out he will kill me. $50 would get you laughed at now.
November 17, 200817 yr As a die-hard Petty fan for 30+ years, I still have to go with the Stones. The Beatles were good but only lasted a decade or so. The Stones have been together since 1962, representing 46 years together. They have had hits in 5 different decades. They've endured band member deaths and firings. They've endured drug and alcohol addiction. They've endured Keith Richards singing lead on a few tunes. Sure they've made a few blunders along the way such as trying to emulate Sargeant Pepper's with their "Their Satanic Majesty's Request" or that little episode where they hired the Hell's Angels for the Altamont show. Sure they got a bit "discoey" with a few tunes in the 70's. But, when it's all said and done and the smoke clears, the Stones are BY FAR the greatest band to have ever walked this planet and I will fight to the death (on the video game of your choice) anybody who disagrees.
November 17, 200817 yr I've always loved the Stones but I tend to think of them more as a blues band than just a rock band.. In their early years they were influenced by blues performers more than the rockers of the late 50's and early 60's..

It's probably safer to say ALL rock and roll was influenced by blues and old black men strumming their guitars. The Rolling Stones have a sound that's still replicated to this day. A band could cover 'Jumpin' Jack Flash' and play all the instruments the same and replace the word 'gas' with 'blast' and those that never heard the song before wouldn't be able to guess that the song is decades old. Their variety and pace have been duplicated time and again. Plus they've been performing FOREVER.
November 18, 200817 yr Easy for me! Led Zepplin! I got burnt out after many years (no pun intended:) Recently Sirius put out a Led Zepplin station. I had forgotten how much I loved them. They are unique and great musicians. Great memories are part of it for me too even though I graduated in the 90's. Channel 33 is programed as one of my favorites, it's amazing how many great songs they produced. Song after song is amazing. I also graduated in the early '90's, but really didn't start listening to them until '93, I'm glad I got introduced.

November 18, 200817 yr When thinking of the greatest rock and roll band the Beatles stick out as my number one. They are closely followed by Led Zepplin, Pink Floyd, Kiss, ACDC, and Lynard Skynard.
