November 17, 200817 yr There is nothing in the music world more difficult than to write a really good pop song. NOTHING. To do it over and over again for the better part of a decade... I don't even have a word to describe it. That right there gives the Beatles the edge and the No. 1 spot on any list I'd make.

You almost basically gave it to someone else other than The Beatles with that statement. For the most part you are right, they had great pop songs (started rockin more after the drugs) but the topic is greatest Rock bands, thus I think other bands deserve the honor slightly before The Beatles.
November 17, 200817 yr Easy for me! Led Zepplin! I got burnt out after many years (no pun intended:) Recently Sirius put out a Led Zepplin station. I had forgotten how much I loved them. They are unique and great musicians. Great memories are part of it for me too even though I graduated in the 90's.

I don't see pop as a genre or type of music. Popular music fuctuates and so at any given moment, what is or isn't popular could change. Every song that has ever made the weekly top 40 is a pop song. People like songs that are catchy and therefore, easy to remember. AC/DC is a band that writes songs that can be really catchy; it's what's given them their staying power. The Beatles did the same thing. They were writing rock songs before anyone had any idea how to be heavy. Considering they came in on the shoulders of Buddy Holly and the like, they made a darn good Rock and Roll band.

When they came out there was no "POP" it was rock-n-roll. They were the icons of their day and still have a lot of influence on todays music. They were the leaders, innovators, and model for all bands, period. One big reason for such an explosion of different types of music in the 70's is because the Beatles broke up. This paved the way for bands to seek their own style and to create their own sound. Because they were no longer being compared to the Fab Four.
November 17, 200817 yr The Beatles paved the way for all other rock n roll bands to follow. But to me some the best were (in no particular order): The Beatles The Who The Rolling Stones Led Zeppelin Kiss AC DC Lynyrd Skynyrd The Kinks The Band The Jimi Hendrix Experience Van Halen Aerosmith (the early stuff)

"Pop" and "popular" mean two different things when it comes to music.
November 17, 200817 yr "Pop" and "popular" mean two different things when it comes to music. Absolutely. That would be putting The Beatles in the same category as Madonna and that dog won't hunt!
