November 19, 200817 yr Author When thinking of the greatest rock and roll band the Beatles stick out as my number one. They are closely followed by Led Zepplin, Pink Floyd, Kiss, ACDC, and Lynard Skynard. I beleive Skynard is the number 1 American band of all time, along with Pearl Jam, Doors, Aerosmith, Van Halen.

Understand your point, but I'd argue the Byrds were more popular and certainly more influential than several on the list such as Talking Heads, S & G, Tull, REM, ELP, etc. More I think about it they may fit into the top 10? Eagles would have to be a lot higher than 25 also, as they're one of the top selling and most popular bands of all time; although hardly a strict R & R band. Great List though!!

The Grateful Dead Nirvana Rolling Stones Lynyrd Skynyrd Drive By Truckers Cross Canadian Ragweed Allman Brothers Band The Band Creedence Clearwater Revival Led Zeppelin The Beach Boys I will confess to not having ever listened to much of The Who. Also, I'm sure I have forgotten quite a bit.

I will give my reasons for my reasoning. Remember, it's just my opinion. The Byrds had 3 songs: Mr. Tambourine Man, Eight Miles High, and Turn,Turn,Turn. Simon & Garfunkle transcend The Byrds. Ask 50 people to name a song by each. The Heads were much more influential - They were a leading part of the new wave sound that started in the early 70s. Even Jool Herc has credited David Byrne as being influential in rap styles. ELP - Sold almost 40 million albums in 8 years. They were a pioneer in the use of synthetic sound in rock & roll. They were one of the first bands to have their own record label. Had it not been for the untimely death of Jimi Hendrix, it would have been HELP. Which would have been the greatest band ever, bar none. REM - Huge impact on the british side. Tull - Just a personal favorite. The Fleetwood Mac originated in the late 60s. When Peter Green was there. They were more popular than the Beatles in England. The song "Black Magic Woman" is originally a Fleetwood Mac song. Written by Peter Green, not Santana. Then in the 70s they exploded in the USA. I left out Taste because they were really only popular in England, but if you want to here some incredible British blues influence down load Rory Gallagher or Taste. Probably the most influential, was John Mayall & The Blues Breakers. But I treated him like Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers. Members of the Bluesbreakers over the year were: John Mayall Eric Clapton Peter Green Jack Bruce Mick Fleetwood John McVie Harvey Mandel Andy Fraser Jon Mark Johnny Almond Those are just the ones I remember.
