I agree that Weis deserves more time. Every coach should be able to coach at least 1 class that he recruited all of the way through. By that time, he'll be able to coach a class for 4 years, another class for 3 and then sprinkle in any underclassmen who can contribute. It will truly be "his team" then.

 

If, as a Notre Dame fan, you're content with making it to a BCS bowl game only to get run off the field in a BCS bowl game, then that is fine with me. To be honest, I actually enjoy it.

 

I was very content to make those BCS games even though we did get run off the field. I mean in my honest opinion, he got those teams to really overachieve. Just when they got to the BCS games, they weren't able to match the speed of the other teams though, because the guys TY had in here were slow. So he definitely got those two teams to overachieve. If they are able to make a BCS game within the next couple of years under Weis, I will guarntee right now that it wont be like those two games. Notre Dame if they make it wont have to do it by overachieving, it will be because they actually have the talent to be there.

Even with "inferior" players so to say that TY had, the record isn' too much different. Anywhere else Weis would be gone, but ND owes alot of money to him and he's going to have to earn that.

How can you justify firing Ty Willingham and not justify letting Weis go? Weis has done the job on the recruiting trail, but that's about it.

 

There was a lot more than just records, but that's all folks look at for some reason. In random order, here are a few of my memories:

-It was his negative demeanor to the fans and the press for one. He also liked to throw his players under the bus in front of the media every time something went wrong. He flat out does no accept responsibilty, one thing Weis does very often. See the scout.com UW board, since he still does the same thing.

-Before he was fired, he admitted he was looking at the Washington job already, which violated his contract requirement to involve the AD in any talks. That was probably the straw that broke the camels back.

-Then there was his comment basically saying he was satisfied with a 6-5 record because "it was a winning record the last time I looked." (Rule #1, any coach who says that should be fired). Not what any fanbase wants to hear.

-Then there's the OL recruiting issue. He didn't recruit many, only 3 his last two years, none of which are still there. To go along with the 9 WR's?!? You need more OL than that, and less WR's. That a formula for disaster. Weis lived off Bob Davie recruits his first season, and doesn't haven't those upperclassmen now. Weis needs to improve his OL and DL recruiting success as well, but at least he is trying. OL is a huge issue right now.

-No BCS bowls, vs 2 for Weis. Even in two big losses, the OSU came was close until 4 minutes to go, not the blowout of epic proportions anti-fans have made it out to be. That bowl money mostly went to academic buildings at ND, not just disappearing in the athletic budget like at most schools.

-Recruiting, recruiting, recruiting. Analyst said he is the laziest recruiter. He only pursued 5* players, and had no backup plan if they missed. Which they often did. He didn't want Brady Quinn (recruited by another recruits dad) and didn't think Jeff Samardzija could play. Best QB and WR in ND history. He basically took his last year totally off, ad Weis only had a few weeks due to being in the Super Bowl, so that class is/was very bad.

Rick Neuheisel recruited just fine. But it is hard to recruit to any northern school, of which ND is one as well. Players want to be where it's warm these days.

 

Ty has come into good situations at Stanford, Washington and ND, with solid recruits in place. All three went steadily downhill after his arrival.

ND misses out on 30% of recruits right off the bat just due to academic requirements. Lou Holtz slightly lessened these requirments ( a handfull of exceptions), and Weis refuses to pursue this tactic, as he and the University should. South Bend isn't the greatest town to wow recruits with, and the weather is 10 times worse than Chicago. They don't take many visits in the winter, which is brutal. Plus, ND won't redshirt unless you get hurt or pursue a masters degree, then get accepted by graduate school. Last year, several players were not accepted by grad school and could not play any longer. Even if hurt and eligible for 5th year, you must have graduated in four years. A lot of players want 5 years to get their four, and those players are generally better due to weight training. Most players have no interest in being forced to graduate in 4 years or less. ND puts their athletes on a 3.5 years schedule. In addition, their code of conduct is a signed and binding agreement, unlike 98% of schools. Infractions that cost you a few games will get you kicked out at ND. Disadvantage ND in terms of recruiting (kids generally don't like harsh rules) but andvantage in terms of it's mission.

To answer the OP's question though, I want him to have more time. I even wanted Ty to have more time, until I saw a lot of what came out afterward. Weis does a lot of great things, except needs to improve the win-loss record. This was his first job, which is not his fault. It was ND's fault to give it to him. I've seen a lot of very humble remarks from Wies come out of South Bend in the last month. But the only ones that go national are the ones where he is cocky, arrogant, or obnoxious. He's accepts all responsibilty for the issues, says fans should be wigging out, and has made many changes looking for solutions.

 

Weis also stated he was taking over playcalling this week since his OC will misses several days due to a death in the family, but no ones reports that part. They only assume he is disrespecting the OC. Most fans want the OC gone anyway, but it would be politically incorrect to fire him, plus Weis is loyal to his staff, and has fired very few.

 

Until the line problems are solved, ND will continue to struggle. The true freshmen and sophomore line players are just getting beat too much, and the junior class was depleted by injuries, grades and defections. The senior class is non existant since Ty started it (barely) and Weis finsihed it. There was no continuity and most of those players left the program or just aren't good.

I think it would be a mistake to get rid of Weis and I'd be surprised if they do. If they can show some patience and let this guy keep working, I'm of the opinion that it will pay off.

:laugh::lol:what? Anywhere else he would be gone? In 2 of his 3 full seasons, he took them to BCS games. And you say anywhere else he would be gone?

I am starting to wonder about Charlie. He does a great job recruiting BUT he needs to develop the players.

I think he might need to find an OC and coaches to develope the talent he is getting there. I think he should get another year. I am a frustrated fan but patient enough to give him another year.

I agree. It really fired me up that he was happy after the game yesterday. I would like to know why it is all smiles after beating Navy by 6, when his team had the ball at the 2 and didn't score then lets Navy score twice and get two onside kicks. Not to mention turning the ball over four times.

 

I don't like the way CW handled it after the game. Imagine how a coach like Nick Saban, Urban Meyer or even Lou Holtz would have reacted after that game.

I am starting to wonder about Charlie. He does a great job recruiting BUT he needs to develop the players.

 

That's what has been disappointing, I have yet to see a player develop by considerable levels from year to year
