It should be. I know Tennessee has lost some of its luster the past few seasons, but I have a hard time believing that being the Coach of the Vols is not one of the best football jobs in the country.

How can you justify firing Ty Willingham and not justify letting Weis go? Weis has done the job on the recruiting trail, but that's about it.

 

Very easy to justify. Weis has taken Notre Dame to two BCS bowl games. Yeah they lost, but that brought a lot of money to the program. He has brought in top recruiting classes unlike Ty. Yeah last years team was just flat out bad. It was a team with bad upper classman that Ty recruited who had no experience, and young talented guys Weis recruited who had no experience. They had lost everyone from the year before on offense and defense. This year we have seen some of that young talent that got experience last year, start to play well this year. Yeah they are not great, but they are not a bad team either. This team should make a bowl game this year.

 

So 3 out of 4 years bowl games, and two of the BCS games. And basically the whole nucleus of the team returning next year, and another good class coming in. So yeah definitely can justify keeping Weis.

I think he deserves a few more years, so he can actually coach the players that he recruited. Notre Dame will probably lose their 10th straight bowl game this year! How many more until the ND fans get antsy and get somebody else in there?

The fat man needs to go if the Irish want to ever be contending for more titles....Being a huge ND hater, I hope they give him a lifetime contract.

Interesting question, and something I have always wondered. Perhaps one of our residential Notre Dame experts could fill us in.

 

FWIW, I defended Ty Willingham at the beginning of the football season. He's done a marvelous job at Washington, too.

Let's see here Weiss took over a program a little low on recruits is in his fourth year and 5-4 against not the toughest schedule. All I can say is he no Rich Brooks.

How can you say he is not getting it done? Could it still be better yes. But as you pointed out he has took them to two BCS games in his 4 years. Not many coaches can say that in the last 4 years. Then last year was a terrible year, however some people really need to look deeper. That team last year was basically all players with no experience. The upper classman that Ty recruited was not that good, and had no experience. Then the younger guys had talent, but once again no experience. So I don't see how anyone could expect to do good with that. So its not like they were going to turn right back into a National Power after last year. However they have made a big jump, and you could see this young talent start to develop. They have shown signs of definitely going in the right direction. So I really don't see what more you should say he should have done.

 

Next year is the year that will tell how things are with Weis. He would have all his recruits and they also will have experience. So if they are not a top 20 team next year, then I could see you say he is not getting it done. I would agree with you then too.

I agree that Weis deserves more time. Every coach should be able to coach at least 1 class that he recruited all of the way through. By that time, he'll be able to coach a class for 4 years, another class for 3 and then sprinkle in any underclassmen who can contribute. It will truly be "his team" then.

 

If, as a Notre Dame fan, you're content with making it to a BCS bowl game only to get run off the field in a BCS bowl game, then that is fine with me. To be honest, I actually enjoy it.

I believe that any seniors Weis's 1st year were Davie recruits. People say Ty is a bad recruiter because he is. Actually look at what he signed both at ND and UW. Horrible.

UW is hard to recruit at.

If the decision were mine, Weis would be safe through 2009. And probably through 2010 unless the season became a complete train wreck. Assuming it didn't, I'd probably evaluate the program after that and make a decision...

 

But, I think Weis has done enough to keep his job. They had some very good early success with a disaster last year. This year they've bounced back a little, so they're making some progress. He's recruited well, so considering they've shown improvement from last year, it would be a terrible move to get rid of him before the end of next season, IMO.

 

Look at UK...nearly everyone was ready to buy his bus ticket out of town after a couple of tough years and then a massacre in Death Valley. You've got to give these guys time to recruit their own players, build their team and get their footprint on the program. Sometimes that requires some patience. I don't think ND is in a position to give Weis the axe right now. Landing a new coach may not be as easy or successful as Irish fans think, especially considering how they've run through them recently.
