February 7, 200917 yr Im not one to name names, but there is a current 8th grade top shelf footballer at Beechwood that went to 5th grade at River Ridge and then again at a Catholic school before going to Beechwood as a 6th grader. And a football/basketball player at Turkeyfoot that is a 7th grader for the second year in a row last year it was at Ludlow. There are more than we know about, as many are not as high profile as those named earlier. The boy from Ludlow is NOT repeating the 7th grade and has not been retained in school. Parents have a right to make choices that are best for their children when it deals with retaining/holding back their child regarding athletics, academics, maturity, etc. I would bet that most fathers would prefer that their son be the oldest in his class rather than the youngest. Many "hold backs" take place prior to a child entering 1st grade if it is NOT athletic driven. Once again, it is the parents right to make this decision. The most important question is if the student is being successful academically, socially, and athletically when the retention takes place or hold back occurs. If so, it is a win-win situation for the child.

It really depends on when the child was held back and at what level that child is playing basketball. For instance Hatton and McClendon are both hold backs but they are both playing up in a JV level as well as some varsity. As of right now neither one of these youngsters have an advantage over whom they are facing on the basketball court. One is 13 and the other is 14. Now come senior year that is a different story. However if I am not mistaken both of these boys will be 18 when they graduate. I also don't believe parents soley hold their children back for athletics. Social and academic reasons can play a big part as to why a child has to repeat a grade. I can't comment on any of the other boys b/c I am not familiar with their situations.

I dont have a dog in this fight but I can tell you that if I held my son back I certainly wouldnt say it was for athletic reasons even if it was.
February 7, 200917 yr I agree, I mean every child is different, each parent should do what is best for their child without being judged by everyone else. There are several issues to think about when making this decision, not just sports. I don't think many 18 or 19 year old males know what they want to do at that point in their lives so I really don't have problem if the whole world wants to repeat a grade or start their child late. As far as AAU, I would like to see the birthdate moved back to January 1, and let there be no grade exceptions. Just one man's opinion. I try to play my children up as much as possible, I think this leads to quicker improvement. I really believe you get better playing people that are better than you are.
February 7, 200917 yr My son is currently 14 years old and in the 8th grade in fact he turned 14 back in November anyway he had some AAU experience when he was back in the 3rd grade and I thought it was a god experience for him. He played on a team where he was 2 years younger than everyone else on his team. That was the last time he got to play AAU and just about every year since we have tried to find him a team to play on but no luck. Yet there has been some years that we gave up on finding him a team. My thought is that he getting ready to enter high school and I myself believe that if he were on a AAU team he could get more looks for a college. He has excellent grades so he's not just a jock he is a student athlete which I am very proud of him for this accomplishment. I guess what I am trying to say is that AAU IMO is a great program but hard for some kids to find a team. The web site IMO basically wants you - yourself - to start a team which would be great if a person had the time which I do not with my profession. I have my own baseball team and have been fortunate to have time to manage it but still I have not been able to give it 100% which I believe AAU basketball requires a 100% of a person's time. If anyone can help my son to find a team please let me know. He plays for Newport 8th grade at this time and usually plays the center position because of his height. He IMO has the skills and potential to be a good player and contribute to a team. Thanks in advance to anyone that can help with this - I know that gryche11 has been very supportive and my family really appreciate his support.
February 7, 200917 yr It would be nice if it would at least match up to the August 1 date. But I guess that date may be different for all states. I would also be in agreement to eliminate grade exemptions allowing kids to play up but not down which most of the time doesn't help them anyway.
February 9, 200917 yr I have never found a "Parent" who held their child back for any reason say it was a mistake. However you can always find a Parent who says I wish...I would have. This debated goes on every year around Basketball season. " for decades it seems" Parents who have held their kids back are for it...The ones who didn't hold the kids back shows all the hate... :thumb: My opinion only... A late Summer, Fall or early winter Birthday is the only time a hold back has an advantage and only for a short period. Good players can play up usually and compete at a higher level no matter what grade their in or age at the time. When your kids get to be 65 and 66 it will not matter at what age the graduated:D They will all catch up sooner or later... This debate is like a Fruit Cake being mailed to you from your elderly Aunt at Christmas.:clap: Your :deadhorse: Just My opinion...

February 9, 200917 yr Agreed ATM10...that subject needs it's own thread! The Bulls beat the NKY Wildcats yesterday at SOAS 55-39. Wildcats played a good first half as the Bulls only led by 1 at the break. They took over after that.
