I enjoy AAU more than school ball. Good AAU teams are generally better coached. You can do more with your players. Obviously better overall competition due to all star teams. All the good/great players are on an AAU team.

 

At the higher levels of AAU...college recruiters go to the top AAU tournaments to see 5 all stars on one team rather than one star on a school team.

AAU is the best thing that ever happened to youth basketball period. It takes the really dominate players out of the youth leagues were the kids that are playing are pretty equal and it lets the very talented kids keep developing agaist stronger compitition. Burnout, is the only negative I see to AAU basketball. You do have a coach or two every now and then that is in it for the wrong reasons.

Can't agree on this one... Rec league teams sometimes get into to AAU not really know what it's about. Not sure what games you are watching but I've been around AAU for the last 16 years and from what I see/seen some of the top players in NKY High school bball were apart of AAU from 3rd grade. Prime example is the recent success at Holmes going back to Jefferson, Hill, Rice, Henderson and many others... Most went through the Tar Heel organization and by the time they were 8th grade, freshman, they were on the court playing Varsity.

AAU has become an issue because of exemptions, etc. I think they would be much better served going to an age only guideline thus avoiding all the confusion and such. Also quite frankly I do not believe they police themselves well enough and make rosters locked in. I have seen teams play in tournaments that always end up with different players not only from weekend to weekend but from day to day within a tourney. I watched a team (not sure of the age) called Cougars beat a team in the first round of a tournament then come back and play them in the finals with 3 different starters and the Cougars get demolished. Those three were not even at the first game and there were kids at the first game not dressed in the finals.

Wow. That's an interesting angle on why. And you know about the rest of the state as far as grade exceptions and holdbacks how? You've got a pretty broad brush in your hands wouldn't you say?

I'm not sure I agree completely with this statement. I have coached both AAU and school ball and I can tell you that coaching school ball is much for difficult and more rewarding at the same time. You don't have a choice really on kids because you can only choose kids at your school. And a lot of times, you may only have 2 or 3 kids that would be good enough to play on a traveling AAU team. You have to develop the rest of the kids. With kids that play on good AAU teams, the talent is there. There's not a lot of "coaching" involved as there is limited practice time to do that. Some teams do not practice at all as they are limited with gym time, distances that kids have to travel, money, etc. Most of the good AAU teams are good because of the talent they have, not necessarily the coaching involved.

Yes coaching at the AAU level is more the "recruiting" angle than it is coaching at times. Build the best team with the best players. I have seen several teams go from losers to big time winners over a 3-4 year period with the same coaches.....but they change a few parts each year (the 11 year old Suns team comes to mind). The coach is still the same guy but he has gotten much better players each year.

I graduated from an Eastern KY school. I know a lot of kids get held back in the mountain areas. Is it for sports or that the education system is just so bad? I don't know. We have all heard the stories about the Richie Farmer type kids that have come out of the coal courntry. These kids are older and have wives and drive coal trucks on the weekends. Are the stories true?Some are, as sad as it to say. I am 20 years removed from high school and I knew of four kids that where held back for sport reasons. Two of them kids where held back twice and went to the same school. The team won the

15th region, their senior year. I know the rules have changed in high school. But you can play against older kids in high school ball, so why not AAU. It will just make you better anyway.
