I graduated from an Eastern KY school. I know a lot of kids get held back in the mountain areas. Is it for sports or that the education system is just so bad? I don't know. We have all heard the stories about the Richie Farmer type kids that have come out of the coal courntry. These kids are older and have wives and drive coal trucks on the weekends. Are the stories true?Some are, as sad as it to say. I am 20 years removed from high school and I knew of four kids that where held back for sport reasons. Two of them kids where held back twice and went to the same school. The team won the

15th region, their senior year. I know the rules have changed in high school. But you can play against older kids in high school ball, so why not AAU. It will just make you better anyway.

Never said it did'nt happen...it does. I said it happens more in other areas of KY. Let's look this year at it at the middle school level. 6th grade state was won by Wayne County. The Walton 6th grade coach stated that everyone on the Wayne Co. team were hold backs except for 2 player. Walton's 6th grade coach is good friends with Wayne Co High School coach.

 

A couple weeks ago they held a BCI school state tournament in N. KY. Hazzard won the 7th grade school state. Everyone of the starting 5 are holdbacks.

 

I'm not against holdbacks...I wish it happened more in N. KY. I've heard statements that it helps the player out more when they are younger. I believe it helps players all the way thru to High school.

IMO, who cares about grade exceptions. People bash AAU because of grade exceptions, but then they get on here and ponder about how good their high school team will be this year, while that high school team may have 5 or 6 or more so called grade exceptions or holdbacks.

U12 and U13 NKY Wolfpack are playing at MidAmerica Sports in Louisville the weekend of 2/14 & 2/15 for the FCA Hoopfest. U13 Wolfpack (as U12) were runners up last year to the Legends. What other teams are playing?

I think you just have to attend a state tournament and see for yourself. I know all of the NKY AAU teams in 14U and I can tell you none of them had kids that had full beards are 6'2 with muscles and jump out of the gym. I was quite amazed at last season's state tourney and it really doesnt matter to me but to put blinders on to it is ridiculous. I say go out and play kids regardless because its all about making you a better player. So you win a STATE AAU championship with a bunch of holdbacks, well you should.

So now we're getting personal? All I'm saying is that there are kids who are held back all over the state, and to say it doesn't happen in NKY is just not right. I have talked to one coach from up there who has lost one of his "grade exceptions" this season and is currently waiting to see if another he's contacted is interested in playing. Paint it how you wish, but there are kids who are "exceptions" all over the state. Just because a kid is a grade exception doesn't mean he was held back a year also. However, there will always be some who make the generalization that because his birthday falls before Sept. 1st and he's a grade exception that he was "held back a grade". Too funny.

I don't really see the difference, they will both be 19 at graduation. Just play ball and get better.

8th grade state has not been played yet but you can bet your bottom dollar the team that wins will have more than 3 exemptions.

 

I'm not slamming holdbacks just don't see it in our school leagues. I wish we could keep up with the Jones' and do the same. In my little neck of the woods I know of 4 holdbacks in middle school....Hatton, Moeves, Pike and True. 4 different schools. That's a far cry from what's going on elsewhere.

Im not one to name names, but there is a current 8th grade top shelf footballer at Beechwood that went to 5th grade at River Ridge and then again at a Catholic school before going to Beechwood as a 6th grader.

 

And a football/basketball player at Turkeyfoot that is a 7th grader for the second year in a row last year it was at Ludlow.

 

There are more than we know about, as many are not as high profile as those named earlier.

No, you took my post wrong if you thought that. I was generalizing with everyone that they should attend for themselves to get an idea of what people are thinking when they post on here about grade exceptions. Its all good SpinDoc. :thumb:

I agree with your post and I remember a Whitley Co team in 6th grade BCI a couple years ago and they must have had 7 kids all older with mustaches.

 

I also concur with the names you mentioned in NKY as holdbacks and I pretty much know the top players up here in middle school. If there are other holdbacks they must be riding the pine. There are certainly not entire teams or even more than 2 kids that I see as obvious holdbacks up in NKY. If Im wrong and someone shows me then I will eat the crow along with Rush2112.
