I have been watching Colerain football for almost 2 decades and this team is one of the weakest I've seen in a while. THEY ARE NOT ONE OF THE TOP TEAMS IN THE COUNTRY!!! NOT EVEN CLOSE TO IT!

 

Colerain made mistake after mistake tonight and that kind of effort will get them summarily dismissed from the playoffs, probably in round 2.

 

So please, do not think for one minute that this team is one of the best in the country. They aren't even the best team in Ohio, and maybe not even Cincy right now.

HHS is very good (although its way too early to tell where they'll be in November) but in reality they had almost no chance of beating Colerain. The final score might make some feel better but giving up 3 TDs in 10 minutes tells us that there is a good gap between #1 in Cincy vs #1 in NKY.

They do make too many mistakes to be put up there with what Colerain has run out on the field for the last decade or so. Sure some of that can be attributed to youth, and is very correctable. The talent level is still VERY high...

There really wasn't much they could do to stop it at that point. Williams was getting the edge on every carry and when they adjusted Durham was gaining big chunks right up the gut.

 

Colerain might not be playing at an elite level right now, but I think they will be by November...

It's not a ranking. It's a computer program. It uses 2007 data to start with and then adds 2008 data as it becomes available. And it's a joke. For the subjective polls, you know, the ones that require actual humans to watch film and compare and contrast, Colerain isn't ranked in anyone's top 25...NO ONES.

 

The whole country as a whole would have to be WAY DOWN if this Colerain team was one of the best in the land.

AS for the topic, of course it's a moral victory. Your kids played hard, they never quit, they played almost flawless football. Only 15 yards in penalties and they never quit. Honestly, it's the best Highlands could probably ever expect to do against a program like Colerain, regardless of the year.

Dude, you won the game, you can stop with the sandbagging now. I understand what you are saying, but Colerain is ranked number one, you may disagree with it, but they do hold the number one position. And they just beat the number one ranked team in Kentucky 5A, Highlands is ranked there. So, I don't think you saying they are not the number one team really makes since, they are ranked there. Is the ranking fool proof? No, but they are arguably the best team in the country.

Contrary to what you may expect, I'm mostly going to agree with what you've said tonight, with the bolded the obvious exception. Highlands has had numerous teams in the two decades you've been watching Colerain that were better than the Cardinals.

 

That said, your take on the Massey Rankings is exactly correct. It is a computer program that uses data from last year to start up this year. Last year, Colerain was one of the two best teams in Ohio and perhaps one of the five best teams in the nation. Unfortunately for Cardinals fans, so was St. X. Both teams end last season with very high Massey ratings, and then this year Colerain beats X in the first week. Now, we have skewed numbers, which mean nothing because both teams lost so much from a year ago

Cf is not sandbagging on this one. The Cards are one of the better teams in the city, but are not among the best in the nation, not even close. That kind of talk is premature at best, and reasonably at least a year away.

Thanks. That would tell me to say its not a moral victory. A moral victory would require them to be competitive on both sides of the ball but simply be outmanned in the end.

I'll give you the first two..HHS played no wear near a flawless game..The first half I was very proud of the Birds as they easily could of been a head at the half..I just think with alot of kids going both ways it kills HHS in these types of games..The big Ohio schools just have way to many kids to throw at you that don't have to play both sides of the ball. The Birds will be fine...The o-line played much better this week...:thumb:

I don't know what a moral victory is, and thus cannot define it. Then again if I can't define it, how do I know that I don't know what is a moral victory? I have a head ache from all this thinking (NOTE: I said "thinking").

 

Bottom line is that we lost, although the Birds played well against a faster, deeper, bigger and stronger football team.

 

Boys, learn from the loss and use it to your advantage in the upcoming weeks. You played very hard and never quit. Like a Highlands team should. Well done.

I'll do my best as, you play against great adversity. Whether you are playing a greater opponent or overcoming some other huge hurdle (injuries, suspensions) that have you well below full strength it does not matter. You take what you have, you put your heart out there, almost to the point that you have to carried off the field. Before you look up to the scoreboard you replay the fact that you did everything in your power to win, you played the absolute best you could play. Then you glance up to the scoreboard and realize that you've lost a very good game to an even better opponent. I would think that the deciding factor would be whether you could watch films the next day and say, "We couldn't have done it any better, but we did it the whole game and never stopped." That's my extended definition of a moral victory. Sometimes teams are just better.

The Cards hold the #1 position in which poll? I cannot seem to find a single poll with them even in the top 25.

In coaching, there are no moral victories in a loss. There will be bright points, highlights or things to build on but there will also be correction, proper technique and lack of execution.
