Year in, year out no. But every few years Trinity or a Highlands/CovCath or St X/Male will have a special class who can play with them.

Is Colerain still running the option?

 

My son and I attended this game and yes, Colerain does utilize the option and a lot of sweeps. They fumbled a couple of times on the option and had a weak passing game. They have a small, (5'6") running back that is lightning fast but easy to knock down if you can catch him. Their O is not difficult to defend if you have good speed and good pursuit (X figured this out after the 1st quarter). Very little between the tackles and only about a half dozen passes from the Cardinals during the game. Their return game is strong and special teams will really have to step up to contain their speedy return men.

 

Colerain's defense up the middle is big and stifling! They stuffed X time and again on attempts to run up the gut. Remarkably X when tried to go around the ends they had only a bit more success. But, I think that if X had a back with CC's speed, it would have been a different ballgame. It would just be nice to have a bruising runner like JC to keep the linebackers honest and spring CC free.

 

X also had a very poor passing game! Their #1 QB was out and the backup was too inexperienced and tentative in the pocket. He often held the ball way too long and took several sacks that could have been avoided. I doubt TG will have this problem.

 

I think the Birds defense can handle this challenge. With little to no passing game to defend, the backers and db's will be free to bottle up the sweeps and options.

 

I also think that if the Birds can work on the passing game over the next couple of weeks, they can throw a wrinkle at the Cards that they did not encounter against X.

 

I really think this will be a very good game and by no means can the Birds be counted out.

Highlands has an uphill battle coming but they might be the only team in KY who can say they weren't afraid of it.

 

CovCath will also play anyone, anywhere, now after that, at least in NKy that is so true! I too have always wonder why Ryle, Boone, Conner, Campbell, Dixie and Simon Kenton all large 6A schools refuse to play some of the better teams from Cincinnati! They instead drive hundreds of miles to play the likes of Henry Clay, Fern Creek, Dayton Belmont, Russell and Mead County, instead of crossing the River to play the Elders, Colerains St. X's ! Seems strange to me at least!

The big boys across the river won't play the NKY 6A teams..Ohio plays by a point system and it does them no good to play these types of teams...:thumb:

Of course the small schools in NKY will have trouble beating a D-1 Cincy school. They have as many students in one of their schools as NKY does in 2 or 3 of their schools combined. But to say that a KY school can't play with either of the St. X or Colerain teams that played Friday is simply, silly.

 

Highlands doesn't shy away from any of them. They just don"t have the numbers of a St. X. school who has 100 Jr's and Sr's on their roster. If they did, there wouldn't be a team in Cincy who would beat Highlands.

It also should be mentioned that St. X was without their starting QB and top offensive lineman. The two QBs that St. X used in this game were not very successfull.

 

 

And Colerain was without their starting middle linebacker and offensive guard. That's football.

They do it like we'd love to see all public schools run. Open enrollment. Feeder system defined to pump kids in to the program ready to produce. Great leadership and coaching at the top and all the way down. Bolden is fantastic to work with. Both of them...

That is true, but how often does a team like Trinity had that year come along in KY? Not very often.

I decided to post this score since it should interest Highlands posters, Cov. Cath posters, and others.

 

Colerain defeated St. Xavier by a score of 13-8.

 

Colerain was leading 13-3 with about eight minutes left in the game when St. X picked up a field goal to make it a one score game. Minutes later, Colerain fumbled near their own 20. St. Xavier could do nothing with it; but did pick up a late safety to end the scoring.

 

Defensively the game was not as close as the score made it. 2 field goals, and the safety was taken by the Colerain coachig staff, kind of like Beechwood in their championship game a few years back. St. X did not cause the safety.

Ok that is not what you stated --- you said "open enrollment." I can tell you that all of our players live in the Northwest local school district. Believe me. I am a lot closer to this than you are.

Wrong. Ky teams have already proven they can play with St X and Elder that I know of. Don't know about Colerain. There are not "a lot of other teams in Cincinnati" in this category. Maybe a couple others at most.

I have to respectfully disagree with you. Its really the same level as Highlands and CovCath football; just more depth. I believe X and T would compete very well, year in and year out with Colerain, Cinti X, Elder and Moeller.
