Colerain, OH 13 St. Xavier, OH 8

Colerain was really crisp in the 1st Q and scored twice with relative ease. From there it was pretty sloppy on both sides...

If Highlands can stay close to Colerain, I'll be impressed...

How does this Colerain team compare to Card teams of the last ten years?

Young, remarkably inexperienced and VERY talented. The made some mistakes tonight that could have cost them the game on O and ST, but the D simply refused to let X punch it in.

Would have loved to see how it played out if Massa was on the field, but he would have had a hard time completing passes on the perimeter. Colerain was quick on the edges as usual and really attacked the ball in the air.

St X had some success running right at them, and using that to open up the slant. Once the Cards adjusted, X didn't do much...

Thanks gt. I am very happy to see Colerain have continued success under more than one head coach.

They do it like we'd love to see all public schools run. Open enrollment. Feeder system defined to pump kids in to the program ready to produce. Great leadership and coaching at the top and all the way down. Bolden is fantastic to work with. Both of them...

Highlands has an uphill battle coming but they might be the only team in KY who can say they werent afraid of it.

Well, Division I in Ohio just got a lot more interesting...

As for the comment about Trinity being the favorite against Saint X, I suspect that the learning curve for X will be steep, given that they start so many new people this year. Especially if they get their starting QB back soon (which should be the case), I wouldn't count Saint X out just yet.

As for Highlands and Colerain... well, what can you say? I still think that it will be better than it was in 2005. On the up side, if HHS does go down in the game, Highlands very well may be able to say that they lost to the eventual D-I champ in 2008. Hopefully they'll stay perfect against KY competition!!!

This Colerain win is impressive and Tyler Williams looked lightning fast on the highlights. They better kick it away from that kid no matter what. St. X not having their QB hurt them and I saw a couple highlights where the fill in QB was either getting drilled or running for his life. Im sure the Bomber faithful are steaming mad over this loss.

As far as Highlands competing with Colerain I think they have a chance to do that. As far as enrollment, does anyone know what Colerain's numbers are compared to Highlands?

These are approx.

Colerain 1800

Highlands 800

Im going to go out on a limb and just guess that there are probably 20 to 30 football studs that can be found in that extra 1000 kids.

Not just NKY, all of KY.

Football at Colerain is a huge priority and they put a great amount of effort into the program. However, they do have a lot of talent at Colerain but so do many large public schools in KY.

Don't forget that their youth program is second to none, they travel in droves to watch their Cardinals play, and, at least when Coombs was there, there was positive reinforcement in the community regarding the coaching staff.

St. X, as you said, was w/out their highly touted QB, but also their stud Tackle who has a stress fracture in his ankle.

Well, regardless of who did/didn't play for Cincy Saint X, Highlands is going to have its hands all sorts of full against the Cardinals in two weeks. One possible plus for HHS vis a vis Colerain is that Colerain starts the year with two HUGE games (the game against Saint X last night and next week's Herbie game). If they win next week (which they probably will) I wonder if there will be a bit of a letting up in their focus during the week they prepare for HHS. Possible, but probably doubtful!

Plus, there could always be an unexpected jock itch outbreak among the Cardinals in a couple weeks!!!!!!! j/k

Colerain was very young and fast. Tyler Williams #1 is only 5'7" 150 lbs but one of the fastest kids you will see in high school. He's only a sophomore. This kid is gonna be special.

It was asked earlier in the thread how this Colerain team compares to the Colerain teams in the past 10 years. Not sure about the past ten years but IMO, this Colerain team wouldn't beat any of the Colerain teams in the past 5 years. They are just to young and inexperienced. It seemed that everyone who ran the ball was a sophomore and everyone who made a tackle on there lightening fast defense was a junior or sophomore. Colerain will have an impressive record this season because their schedule just isn't that tough. They should be a better team by years end but I really don't see them being a real threat to win state. But in the next two years, look out!

If there was ever a year Highlands could beat a Cincy big school, this may be the year, although I wonder if Highlands will be able to handle Colerains speed, especially on that Colerain defense.

St X. was a little tougher to gauge because Massa and the stud linemen were out. I do believe if Massa could have played it would have changed the whole offensive game plan for X. IMO, X. may have been able to pull off the win. The two back-up QB's did not play very well and made a lot of mistakes. St. X and Colerain's defense were way ahead of their respective offense's. Tyler Williams had a couple of big plays which resulted in two td's for Colerain but other than that, both teams struggled to move the ball at all on offense. Overall, a somewhat boring game. Didn't have the feel of the past St. X.-Colerain games. Maybe because it was the first game of the season and not a playoff atmosphere.

St. X. better improve or they may walk away, make that limp away, from the Trinity game like Elder did a few years ago.
