Kinda defeats the idea of the one state champ thing for those that try to say KY. is unique and dont class state champs.

 

Well on rivals.com it shows we are the only state with one state champion. So to me everything else is just a small slice of the big cake.:fire:

Six is way too many(as we see now in football) but even 2 would be nice. There are small schools all over the place that have never even won their Region (and never will) much less win the state. Give them some hope anyway of getting to a state tournament.

 

I wouldn't say that they never will win a regional championship, are the odds against them yes but that it will never happen is wrong. :sssh:

The way I see schools splitting up would put 48 schools in each class. that would make for 8 districts of 6 teams. For example:

 

In 4A there would be a district of: Mason, Bourbon, Fleming, Lewis, Russell, and West Carter.

 

In 2A we would have a mess. Bracken Co. is far pretty far away from enough schools to make a district ( much like thier football). There are 6 schools in NKY that would be 2A.

 

Travel would be a disaster in postseason play especially.

 

Wouldn't Mason Co. be considered 3A if using just some, not all of the football parameters? When they moved to 3A from 2A they were in the gray area enrollment wise and had the option a few yrs. later to go back to 2A the attendance hasn't grown that much to be a jump to 4A I don't think.

Six classes, what a mess.

I like the drama of the small schools "David vs. Goliath" each year.

Do you really think Silver Grove will ever be able to win the 10th Region? But maybe an All A Region.

All this talk about Kentucky possibly going to classification is just that....all talk.

 

The KHSAA will never go to classification in basketball.

I think everyone should quit kidding themselves. High School sports is not for the KHSAA to be a dictator and not consider what is best for the kids and the school systems. It is not about money. It should be about the kids and making it the most competitve and enjoyable environment possible. The fact is that schools are growing, consolidating and the more this happens the further the gap grows between small schools and big ones. The average small school can't compete with big schools. There are exceptions but 90 percent of the time this is true. There are years of history to prove it. The fact that Kentucky's Sweet Sixteen is so much better than every other state's is largley because of the fans in this state. Look at all the important sports in the state. College or High school. Kentucky people are extremely passoniate about sports. The football program at UK is average and they pack the stadium every saturday. The basketball program even on down years always sells out rupp. It is not the type of Tournament the KHSAA is running that makes it so great it is the fans.. I think it is extremely important to think about that. Kentucky goes to 4 classes in basketball. Get rid of the All A and make it 4 classes. The football players deserve a class system but the basketball players dont? Doesn't make sense.

Whether or not the Sweet 16 is fair competition-wise is irrelevant. The Sweet 16 has history and tradition on its side, and people are pretty solidly behind one class, one champion.

The fans don't want classification in basketball. The Sweet Sixteen has so much tradition and it means so much to the school that wins it because they know they are the only state champion and don't have to share the title with any other school, plus it brings in more money for high school athletics then any other sport in KY. I think anyone that thinks the KHSAA will sacrifice tradition and revenue to switch to classification is dreaming because it will never happen.

It never will be. Anyone who thinks otherwise is kidding themselves. No one needs to look any further than Indiana to see what moving from the one class to multiple does to the tournament.

As was stated above, you could have classes and still have the Sweet Sixteen and crown one state champion. If it is 2 classes, then the Sweet Sixteen is the top 8 in each class and the final game is the champion of each class facing off. Go to 4 classes and you have the top 4 from each class play it off till the final 4 is the champ of each class and then they play each other in the semis and finals. Either of those give you a 16 team tourney and one overall champion.

 

For those who are concerned about revenue, I actually think that would almost guarantee great attendance in the final game because there would always be an underdog in the lower class champ trying to beat the big school champ. You also would have more excitement and likely higher attendance for the earlier games as the teams play for a championship in their class.

 

I think obstacles to going to classes beyond tradition are logistics, travel and impact on district and regional championships (including attendance).

I played on the Trinity team that won the 7th region title in 2004, which was the school's first ever trip to the Sweet 16. Everyone knows how competitive the 7th region is, especially this year, when right now the majority of the top ten teams in the STATE will all be competing for ONE spot in the state tournament.

 

However, having been a part of a team that NO ONE gave a chance at the beginning of the year to make it out of the 7th region and into Rupp, I know its possible and would hate to take that chance of a "Cinderella" run away from future players and teams.

 

Please DO NOT change our one-class system... it is so unique and has so much history and it was an AMAZING experience that I will never forget.
