May 5, 200818 yr As someone said, it's hard to make comparisons of times between the various races. Post position, track conditions, pace, trouble, etc all play a hand. Big Brown was ultra impressive winning the Derby and certainly looks like a horse that could be something really special. It's a shame that the PETA people are trying to take a little shine off the industry during his moment.

What are the fastest times recorded for the Derby? Watch the tape. It was well past the finish line when he did that? Secretariats time is 2.4 seconds faster. That's at least 30 yards. Pull up You tube and view Secretariats Belmont run and tell me Big Brown is as good. No way
May 5, 200818 yr Well, my first Derby experience was certainly bittersweet. Our day started with rain, but by the time we got to Louisville, the clouds had begun to part and the sun was shining through. Churchill Downs was amazing. There were hats and mint juleps everywhere. You can just feel the history and tradition in that place. My boyfriend, Marcus, and I spent the day hanging out at our seats, walking around the paddock and becoming friends with our neighbors. We really just wanted to take it all in and enjoy every moment. As the post time for the 134th running of the Kentucky Derby grew closer, you could feel the excitement in the air. For those that know me well, they know that I'm an animal lover and I have a very soft heart. I had been reading about, and managed to become attached to the filly Eight Belles, throughout the week leading up to the Derby. Maybe it's because she was the only filly in the race among 19 boys, or because no one believed that she could run with them. Either way, I had faith in her. It seemed that every woman at Churchill on Saturday was behind that beautiful grey filly. I bet her across the board, with the feeling that she would finish in the money. Marcus did the same. We were both proud and excited to see her running second behind the favorite when she came past us down the stretch. She may not have won the race, but she blew 18 other boys out of the water! We both took pictures with our winning tickets, so that we could remember that moment. Our excitement turned to sadness rather quickly, as word about the fate of Eight Belles spread through the stands. Everyone was shocked and devastated to know that she was gone just minutes after she crossed the finish. I was heartbroken, and I cried for her. I was not the only one. It was certainly a somber ending to an otherwise amazing day. The Kentucky Derby is something both of us want to experience again. We definitely learned from this trip (where to sit, where to park, etc.), and we will certainly do things a bit differently next time. It's something I hope all of you get to do some day (if you haven't already). I thank God for the beautiful weather. Thanks to Marcus for an awesome birthday gift. Pull up You tube and view Secretariats Belmont run and tell me Big Brown is as good. No way Horse Racing is not about seconds and who has the quickest times. I am not saying Big Brown is as good as Secretariat was but he has just as much talent IMO. He has 4 races and has not been challenged in any of them, the same can not bee said for Secretariat. Big Brown should only get better as horses dont fully mature till they are 4 years old. Doubtful that Big Brown will run that long but he is a tremendously talent horse and the victory on Saturday was ultra-impressive. Also MALA, wasn't it talked about before the Derby how there was like a 25 m.p.h. headwind too? I know a few friends that were in the infield and said it was crazy windy.
May 5, 200818 yr I have a friend who bought a $50.00 to win ticket on Big Brown on Friday. His wife washed his shirt Saturday morning, destroying the ticket which was in the front pocket. She was praying for ANYONE but him to win. It made for an interesting derby party!
May 5, 200818 yr Big Brown beat 19 other horses, that were all inside of him, by 4 lenghts while being forced 4 wide around both turns and following pretty quick fractions. Add that to the fact he was never really asked by his jockey and givin a chance to breath between the 3/8 pole and the 5/16 pole. The race was never in doubt.
May 5, 200818 yr I now believe in Big Brown and am really impressed by him. However, no way he belongs in the conversation with Secretariat yet. Let's see him race a few more times and see how good this bunch of horses is before we annoint him an heir. Right now he is one of 134 KY Derby winners and has won a maiden, allowance and two G1 races. I am really looking forward to the next two races and then hopefully on the the Breeders Cup where Curlin awaits. That will really tell us where he belongs.
May 5, 200818 yr I didn't have Big Brown but did have Eight Belles :cry: and Denis of Cork. I select Eight Belles because of the trainer winning the Oaks. I selected Denis of Cork because it reminded me of wine. I love wine!

I don't know a whole lot about horse racing, but I do know enough that if a horse starts from the 20th position they have a lot of ground (and time) to make up. So, I think the time issue you mentioned is a wash.

On the stretch turn, he went wide to pass the leading horses. Big Brown may have a run a few more yards, but not the difference 2.4 secs is. I am not contending that Big Brown is not a great horse, I just hesitate to put him in Secretariats class. Now if he goes on to win the Triple Crown in such a dominating fashion as Secretariat, then I will agree. Again, watch the 73 Belmont and you tell me.
