Big Brown wins the 134th Kentucky Derby

Featured Replies

Secretariat was dead last going into the 1st turn. On the backstretch made some ground through the middle of the field. On the stretch turn, he went wide to pass the leading horses. Big Brown may have a run a few more yards, but not the difference 2.4 secs is. I am not contending that Big Brown is not a great horse, I just hesitate to put him in Secretariats class. Now if he goes on to win the Triple Crown in such a dominating fashion as Secretariat, then I will agree. Again, watch the 73 Belmont and you tell me.

Also wouldn't it be correct to assume that the track that day was must faster that Secretariat ran on then what Big Brown raced on? The fact that Sham holds the 2nd fastest Derby time tells me that they were racing on a concrete like track. Just another variable! :D

Fast in 2008. Fast 1973. An afficianado like youself would know that Sham was also a great horse. Like I said Big Brown's race was impressive, I just can't compare him to Secretariat. Not yet. 2:24 at Belmont still stands as the world record in the mile and a half. Let's see if Big Brown gets anywhere near that before we compare.;)

Hit the exacta and had eight belles to show.

My mom hit it with the same thing...

She has now picked the Derby 4 years in a row and 6 out of 9 years...

I agree that he will have to prove his greatness. And yes, I did watch the '73 Belmont (live and in black and white at the local Sunoco gas station hangout). What Secretariat did that day was totally awesome. Absolutely unreal.

But I think Big Brown has the best chance at a Triple Crown since the last one was won in '78. I'm a little concerned about the Preakness because it's a short track and a speed race, but if he gets past that one I believe the longer Belmont will be a breeze for him.

Big Brown may be the next "Big Red".

Told you guys he wasn't. Not even close
