Ky is working with a new program that is called Infinite Campus.

 

From home, teachers will be able to put in grades, lesson plans, etc.

 

GREAT PART OF THIS PROGRAM: Parents will be able to access grades, discipline, attendance of their child from their home computer. Now, I am not talking about just a number grade but a listing of all the assignments and you will be able to see which ones that your child has chosen to take a zero on by not turning it in.

 

It is in the pilot stage and my school district is serving as one of the test schools, trying to work out all of the bugs in the system.

 

Is it effective. Let's just say my daughter hates it.:fire:

 

She comes home and I can ask her why she did not turn in her assignment during 3rd block today.:fight:

This is like the chicken-and-the egg debate. Which came first: underpaid/overpaid teachers or under-educated populace?

 

Will we get better results (graduation rate, college entrace rates, increase in median pay) if we pay teachers more?

 

I once had a friend tell me that teachers are underpaid. I told him that he was lucky that they are because if they were paid more, I would take his job. He agreed with me. He is now a Principal with 20+ years experience and he would agree with me today, too.

 

I have neither the desire nor talent for teaching but increased pay means an increased pool of workers. That is my point.

I think that we are probably in agreement, Mr. Network. If the pool of available teachers is adequate to fill most teaching positions, the average pay level is about right. If there are certain teaching specialites such as special needs, math, etc., where current salaries are not attracting qualified candidates, then salaries for those particular positions need to be raised.

 

As for the competition for teachers along borders with states where teacher salaries are higher, then maybe the pay scales in those specific areas may need to be a little higher - but only if teacher shortages in those areas truly exist.

 

The problem is that teacher advocacy organizations like NEA would address the problem of attracting more qualified math teachers by increasing teacher salaries across the board, including specialties or geographic areas where there are too few open positions for graduating teachers.

Bottom line people: The very best KY teachers are way underpaid and the worst teachers are way overpaid!

 

:thumb::thumb: We have a winner!! I've been catching up reading all these posts waiting for this comment. I have two close friends who teach. One teaches Ninth grade English. He is on cruise control. Walks into the school right before first bell and leaves right after last bell. No new lesson plans, just keeps on going the way he has for 40 years. The other is a science teacher. He is constantly working outside of his school hours developing new and exciting ways to get the lessons across. He's at school early and stays late to be available to help students. I would bet he puts in almost double the hours of my first friend. Both make similar amounts but one is way overpaid and the other is way underpaid.

Coming from a family full of teachers, coaches and people in education along with quite few friends in the same line of work all that I have to say is that whoever thinks that teachers are Overpaid .....well, I really can't say what I want to about that.

 

Teachers are Grossly UNDERPAID!! With the education required for a teaching degree, plus a masters degree and many get other qualifications as well I would say that teachers are some of the most educated people in our society that are getting paid the least for it.

 

Some other thoughts for those that say teachers are overpaid........ If you can read this, Thank a teacher.....If you can type and post on here, understand what you are reading anywhere...Thank a teacher. Those are just a couple of and simple examples of what I am trying to say.

 

Should anyone out there be a Doctor, Lawyer, C.E.O., Own your own business or whatever the fact is that you have teachers to thank for your education that got you in that position.

For anyone to think that teachers are overpaid is just crazy and really one of the most arrogant statements that I have heard. :irked:

I'm not going to argue that teachers are overpaid, but the percentage of our state and national budget attributable to swollen education bureaucracy and entitlements is grossly and appallingly excessive.

Doesn't STI, break like every 3 or 4 days I remember when it first went in every teacher I knew complained about the system and how awful it was. I know several teachers kept their grades in the book along with STI because STI had been known to erase semesters worth of grades when it would crash on almost a weekly basis.

Hindsight has pointed out the key difference Crunch. STI is for teachers to access grades from home but not sure every district has allowed parents to access from hom.

 

Infinite Campus is the next step where not only parents can access information but also teachers can work from home to input grades.

Better safe than sorry and a lot of teachers do still keep grades in a gradebook. Me included.

During the Q & A, they raised their hand and asked the STI presentors if they knew that you press Alt, Control and hit Home 72 times (some combination like that) that it disables all of their security protocols and you could access anything in the program.

 

The boys had done it. Now why they would hit it 72 times, I have no clue.

Interesting STI presents all new possibilities for Academic Fraud thats for sure, not to mention if you make the changing grades function available at home it won't be long before some student can access it from their home pc.

The new program is not STI but Infinite Campus. I would assume other districts will have it next year or the following.

I just mentioned it to track the grades, assignments, attendance, and discipline, at home. it is only as good as the input. There seems to be long gaps between updates. Hey, at least I got us away from the other subject. I think that was worth the post:thumb:

In education, a full time position is 240 days. This would be 20 days per month or 5 days a week for 12 months. Teachers are only paid for the days they work (school calendar). That amount just happens to be divided by 12 in order for them to receive a check every month. I think most teachers would love to be paid for all 240 days.

 

Does that median household income include those that sit home everyday a draw a check without a job? I would think Kentucky ranks pretty high in those rankings. Gee, it's great to know that eight years of college should earn me no more than Kentucky's median income.

 

I would challenge anyone who thinks it so easy educating todays youth to go get yourself a teaching job and join the rest of those enjoying all those breaks--just don't make any plans because if you do everything that is being asked of teachers today, you will not be basking in the sun.

5 days a week for 12 months is 260. There are more than 48 weeks in our 12 month calendar.
