April 9, 200818 yr Teachers are given 187 day contracts. End of story. They are paid to those amount of days only. Many elect to take their pay over the year. . I think the bolded part is the point many are missing. You are both correct. But there is a but there. Keep pay low and you limit the quality of teachers that you are going to be able to recruit to teach. When a quality teacher does not feel they can adequately support their family by teaching than you are going to lose that teacher irregardless of how many days that they work. If you are going to hold to the position, that the low salary is okay because of the number of days they work, than don't whine about the quality of teachers because some good teachers are going to leave the profession and go somewhere that they can support their family better than they can at a teacher's salary.

That's called the free market.

April 9, 200818 yr I won't and I don't recall that I ever have other then to blast tenure protections that help keep incompetant teachers in the classroom.
April 9, 200818 yr I won't and I don't recall that I ever have other then to blast tenure protections that help keep incompetant teachers in the classroom. That is a myth. Teachers don't get tenure till after their 5th year teaching. Many, many, many teachers are let go in those first 5 years. And many others go of their own accord because of salary or having to deal with what they have to deal with. A recent study showed the teaching career of a beginning teacher is about 3.2 years. Most are gone before they ever reach tenure.
April 9, 200818 yr Will you receive a check for the time that you are on vacation? My father received 4 weeks of paid vacation time. So did my mom. She would take vacation time and get paid. Summer time is UNPAID time. The 20 days of fulltime positions are UNPAID. My district does give 1 vacation/personal day per year. I usually take mine to chaperone my child's school field trip. So you don't get a check during the Summer months?
April 9, 200818 yr So you don't get a check during the Summer months? Yes and no. You can have the choice of taking your checks in 10 months or 12 months. Obviously, different amounts. Some teachers choose 12 at a lower monthly amount. Even though they choose 12, those checks are done, printed up and waiting in the central office for the teacher. By law, since the employment time is done, all pay to the teacher has to be done and over by the end of the fiscal year on June 30th. So, teachers receive a check but it is not paid for that time. BTW, for me, we get paid ONCE A MONTH. Any other salaried position get paid once a month?

April 9, 200818 yr Do you have an issue with getting paid once a month? Yes and no. Hate it but after spending time getting all my bills to come out on the 1st of each month, it is not as bad now. Does get tight in that last week leading up to the paycheck. Especially tight when you get paid like 12/20 before Christmas break and the next paycheck is scheduled for January 27th. That is a long time.

April 9, 200818 yr A lot of districts pay bi-monthly. As am I. If it is a true issue, you should work to get it resolved. Have tried on two different occassions and board has shot down the idea. They do it very creatively. They have tied bi-monthly with direct deposit. If we go 2 checks, than you HAVE to go direct deposit. The older teachers do not trust the direct deposit and don't want that option. So, the board keeps it as is.

That's really hard to believe. Especially with such a highly educated group.

If you believe in a free market and you want to increase the quality of education in our society, then the answer is simple. Increase the wage for teachers, and you will increase the competition in their sector. If you are going to have government regulated wages, don't expect price cielings to maximize production.
