Henry Clay's talent without their two tallest, best players is not good enough to win on the road against even a team not at full strength.

 

It'll be tough for the Bird's the rest of the year if Simpson is out. The d will be able to focus on mcgraw who i presume was taking one of his nights off to make sure they don't over work him after the injury??

Actually both of Henry Clay's best players were out. Moses broken foot in Scott County game and out 4-6 weeks. Aaron Boyd was taking a football recruiting visit again this weekend. So HC was missing about 35 points from their starters tonight.

 

I did hear from a family member in the stands, that the Highlands player did break his hand. That is tough and I feel for the kid.

 

I thought Highlands had the game with a minute to go up 4 points. Brandon Wilder, who is a freshman, hit a 3 to get it to a 1 point game. A foul by HC. Highlands hit 1 of 2, to go up by 2 with about 22 seconds to go. HC called timeout and put in 4 of their best 3 point shooters. Worked it around and Brian Nichols hit a 3 with 7 seconds to go, putting HC up 1.

 

After Highlands timeout, they bring it in. Ball gets knocked out of bounds at half court with about 4 seconds left to go. Brought the ball in, got a shot and a tip. The tip almost went in and would have counted I believe.

 

Good crowd and good game, both varsity and JV. Wish the injured players from Henry Clay and Highlands a speedy recovery.

If indeed Simpson did break his hand, this is tragic for Willie and the Birds.

 

They have postioned themselves as one of the very top teams in the region and now suffer a major setback. Justin Seiter all over again!

If this would have put the opponent in the bonus, why in the world would you commit a foul so that they can tie it at the free throw line? The armchair coaches in Ft. Thomas need to sit in the stands and enjoy the game rather than trying to continually second guess the coach. It has been why don't they run, why do they slow it down, why do sophomores play, why do juniors not play and now why don't you up two and the opponent in the bonus. The last I checked, Mr. Schlarman has been quite successful and certainly does not need to be second guessed.

 

One of the main purposes of this and similar sites is to "second guess" coaches. You are absolutely correct that Mr. Schlarman is one of the best coaches in the region/state. No one "needs" to be second guessed...but guess what? It's going to happen! It comes with the territory. I'm sure Mr. S loses not one wink of sleep over it. And last time I checked, this site was quite successful and does need second guessers. :lol:

From what I heard, Greg probably could've played. He had played a few back to back games and was quite sore (he has been doing a lot of icing). But honestly, why push him when this game is just an exhibition one? It doesn't count for anything other than a bit of experience and a point in the win column. It doesn't determine whether Highlands makes the playoffs or anything like that. As far as I'm concerned, they made a good decision to sit and rest him for a game.

 

As far as Simpson, he went up for a layup and got smacked pretty hard on his hand from what I saw. He came away fast and went straight out of the game. The trainer took a look at it for a second and he left the floor with his mother trailing close behind. It is never good to see that. I did also hear that he broke a bone in his hand though. Hopefully this doesn't end his career at Highlands.

 

But I want to bring up something that I thought was quite amazing. The way Highlands played, having no real stars on the court, was simply miraculous. We played some serious, fundamentally sound basketball in the 2nd half and I kept asking myself how we managed to stay in the game. I was very proud to be a "bird" at that point. Even if the final score didn't come out as we would have preferred it, I was very impressed by our heart and determination.

 

Also, how about that little Lother kid? He was all over #3 for HC. I honestly think they made a mistake by taking him out. He may be young, but that boy can play.

Sorry, last I checked, this forun is posting observations and opinions on various sports. Just my opinion, you either agree or disagree.

Very common strategy to foul so a 3 can't beat you, especially at home. Hindsights 20/20, but if HHS would have fouled they may still be playing.

No Mosses or Boyd and Henry Clay still wins. How good is the 11th region. Henry Clay is the 3rd best team in the district.

I would say it was very good execution by HC on both of the last two trips down the court and not a lack of defense. It wasn't as if HHS sat back and let HC hit the shots, they made several passes/cuts and kicked out to get the open looks.

 

I thought Coach S did a great job after Simpson went out. I gave HHS little to no chance when Nick got injured. Willie used Lother and Grubbs to rest the other players just enough to keep them fresh until the end. I was impressed by the poise of the remaining two seniors-Hurtt and Eaton--they seemed to be the glue that help the sophs. make this one of the most entertaining games I have been to in a long time.

That's a tough situation though. Say you foul then suddenly the guy throws up a shot from behind the arc. You could possibly put the guy on the line for 3 free throws too. I know I'd just rather play the defense.

You do not put a team on the line to potentially tie the game because you are playing at home. Nice post Stink. I could not agree more. I was very impressed with the play of Michael Eaton last night. He does not score a lot of points but he does all of the dirty work for this team and he took charge on the court and in the huddle after Willie was done talking. This team will miss Nic Simpson, but they are not going to lay down and die. Tough game against Boone on Tuesday and then two next weekend against the Beechies and Reading.

If HC was in the bonus down by 2 at the end, no way you foul. You give your kids a chance to win the game, not the other team's kids...

 

Really doesn't make sense to foul up 2...3 is a different story.
