It could be argued that none of those were exactly big hits, albeit great tunes. How often do you hear any of those played on any classic rock station? I think I read one time that it was first done in some form a couple hundred years ago, back when there were muskets and the song was about loading the musket and shooting it. I don't know. That sounds crazy but I think I read that somewhere. You're right about the origin about the gun. It's attributed in it's modern form to Leadbelly Ledbetter (although there is evidence that it was already a "traditional" song). The same goes for "The Midnight Special", covered by CCR, "Gallis Pole", covered by Led Zeppelin as "Gallows Pole", "Where Did You Sleep Last Night", covered by Nirvana.

As far as charting singles, there wasn't much known of their songs, apart from "For What It's Worth" until Neil Young made some of them somewhat notable after performing them in later years and including them on his Decade compilation album. The song may have been a one hit for the group because they were only together for 2 years but members Stephen Stills and Neil Young have had their share of rock stardom. Very true. To a lesser extent, you can toss Jim Messina in there too. Lesser-known fact about Buffalo Springfield: Neil Young and Bruce Palmer started the band after the lead singer from their previous band, Rick James (yes, that Rick James), was arrested for dodging in the draft.
