Reds trade Hamilton for Volquez

Featured Replies

The more I have thought about the trade today, cause I have A LOT of free time and no hobbies.

We all know the Reds have too many outfielders and seeing as how they weren't going to get much if anything in return for Freel and Hopper. They will keep Griffey around in his chase for 600. They will likely sign Dunn to a long term contract. That leaves Hobbs and even though I love his story and loved the way he played last year, he was the one guy that could get something in return.

With Bruce having a shot in spring training, let's see if these pitchers can develop.

Atta boy!

I love the outrage of some people who don't get trading a 27 y/o OF'er, with a plethora of issues, for a potential big time starter who's 24.

I'm not even counting Herrerra, if it was just Volquez, I'd be happy, adding in another young arm makes this a steal for the Reds IMO.

:thumb: This says it all right here. I couldn't agree more.

Volquez was 0-4 in 2005 in TX, 1-6 in 2006 in TX, 2-1 in 2007 in TX. I still think he's gonna have some growing pains especially and in the unfriendly GAB. Herrera sounds like a project who will spend a few more years in the Minors.

2005 he was 22 and Texas was AWFUL!

In AA and AAA last year was 14-2 with an opponents batting average of .190. I'd say the kid can throw, haha.

This really, really, sucks!

I agree. I also thought it was dumb letting go of Felipe Lopez. Hamilton helped us out a lot, and IMO this was a dumb move...

Keeping Hamilton and trading Bruce for Bedard would have been much better and that was the main player they wanted for him.

I still think Hamilton is a potential MVP. Good Luck and my prayers are with this young man!

A lot of prospects can throw in the minors.

I am not writing him off I just wanted a known starter with big league experience. It kinda seems like we got Homer II but not as hyped. Who knows maybe he turns out great. Hope he does. It's just after hearing names like Bedard.. Haren.. an getting Volquez is a change up.

Let's remember, baseball is a business. Nice guys & great stories don't win baseball games.

I like the move. Hamilton is expendable, although I would have loved for him to stay. We got 2 young, live arms in return and 1 is even left-handed. A great deal for the Reds, even if these two don't crack the majors this season.

I hope that Hamilton reaches the MPV level someday.

But this is a good trade for the Reds.

Sorry duck, but you are wrong. :D The Reds brass is much, much higher on Bruce than they were Hamilton. Bruce has Hall of Famer written all over him. In two years you will be on posting how wrong you were. :p

Here are some stats from this past season for Herrera (41 games in 2007),

W-7

L-2

ERA- 3.69

Runs - 28, 26 earned

HR's allowed - 4

IP- 63.1

SO- 75

BB- 25

Opponents BA- .246

In the Winter league he had a 2.53 ERA in 10.2 IP.

May be a good set up man.

Josh Hamilton was an all around player. The reds just traded him for two AA pitchers, it's not like they are going to be able to come up and pitch any time soon! Stupid move by the reds.

Do some research next time. Volquez will compete for, and most likely win of the jobs in the starting rotation. He's stuff is electric. The Reds had to move an outfielder to make room for Jay Bruce. Please don't talk so much the next time you sit behind me at the Reds game. :sssh:

 Volquez has a shot at the starting rotation next year. Herrara may only be a AA guy right now, but not Volquez.
