I would go with Jack Haskins for taking a team that was 5-5 in 2A last year, moved up a class and went 14-1 with a state runner-up trophy.

 

Shawn Berner did a very good job at Fort Campbell, but all of us in the west knew the Falcons were a state contender this year. The same goes for Ty Scroggins at Central.

HOw about co-winners - Scroggins and Ft. Campbell. Both, classic great stories from the season as well as the championship

I couldn't argue with any of the nominations submitted here. Any would be a worthy winner. But I also think you should look beyond the 12 coaches who made the finals to find some other deserving candidates as well. Larry French, Ray Graham and Mark Brown come to the top of my head.

 

Ultimately though, I'm torn between Haskins and Scroggins. And I love the Central story, but I'd give the nod to Haskins.

Naturally, I think it should be Coach Rash. He had a very tough way to go this year. Despite adversity, he managed to lead those boys to a state championship.

 

He taught by example, what true heart is all about.

There have been some great nominations for Coach of the Year on this thread, and some great cases supporting the nominations.

 

I am glad I do not have to vote.......so I won't.

 

There are a lot of equally deserving coaches for the Coach of the Year award!

My vote would go to Shawn Berner of Fort Campbell. I don't know of any coach that had to deal with more off-the field issues every day than he and his staff. Not to mention the transformation and adjustments made after a bad 0-2 start.

Don't they have 6 classes of Coach of the year? They should.

For homer reasons, I'd like to see Dale win it. But I'd vote for Scroggins of Central if I had a vote.

The following two coaches will not make the radar screen throughout the state, but should receive Honorable Mention for Coach of the Year:

 

Mike Sammons (Greenup County):

 

Turned a 1-6 team into Playoff District Champions in 4A District 8 and a 5-8 record. Finished the season 4-2 with the two losses coming to top ranked Mason County in 3A and Harrison County in 4A. Both losses were by a point, Mason County (34-33 in OT) by failing the 2-point conversion and a gutsy performance on the road at Harrison County in the Regional Finals, 31-30.

 

Lee Evans (Boyd County):

 

Turned an 0-6 team into the Regular Season District Champions in 4A District 8 and a 5-7 record. Finished the season 5-1 with the only loss coming in the District Finals against Greenup County. Coach Evans showed tremendous class following the last second loss to Greenup County, 27-26. The game apparently was over with a Boyd County victory when the clock showed 0:00; however, the ball had been spiked by Greenup County with half of a second left leaving one more play. Coach Evans indicated afterwards that he did see time remaining following that play.
