If an ineligible player touches or catches the pass anywhere on the field it is illegal touching. I was listening to the webcast and heard the call, but did not see it. However, in this case I believe an ineligible touched or caught the pass.

 

One of the LCA recievers knocked the ball up in the air and a LCA lineman caught it. I thought it was fair game to catch once the ball was tipped in the air. Maybe I'm wrong. I know its legal in college.

AS FAR AS SOME CALLS .EARLIER IN THE GAME PASS INTERFERENCE CALLED ON BEECHWOOD .THE BW DEFENDER WAS IN FRONT OF THE LCA WR .THE BALL WAS THROWN OVER THEM WHERE ONLY THE LCA WR COULD GET IT .THE LCA CLEARLY PUSHED OFF THE BW DB TO GAIN ROOM .WHEN THE LADY REF THREW THE FLAG I SAID THAT IT WILL BE OFFENSIVE .HOW STUNNNED WAS I .

Not kicking the FG was not a gutsy call, that was a dumb call. They have a great kicker who is going to make that FG 99% of the time. They tie the game and try to get the ball back and then have a chance to kick a FG for the win.

 

Even if LCA had scored on the play, I still call it a dumb call. It makes no sense to me. The coach is supposed to always put his team in the best postition to WIN the game.

 

They had a punt blocked for a safety. So what makes you think they wouldn't have blocked the FG? You can't.

I agree with you Coach Buckett .I thought he did a great job doing what he had to do to get a big underdog in position to win .I too would of went for it .BW had a hard time tackiling #30 at times ,I beleive it would of been in his hands for ME .

I have to respectfully disagree. LCA has a quality coaching staff, and they put them in position to be in the State Championship game, enough said.

 

LCA coaching staff put the players in position to be on the 1 yard line with the game on the line. The LCA coaching staff put them in a position to beat a program that now has 10 State Championships. The LCA coaching staff put the team in the Championship game in a year that not to many people were giving them a chance to beat Pikeville for the Region Championship, or Hazard in the Semi-Finals after Hazard beat them by 20 points in the regular season. The coaching staff put in a position, on the 1 yard line down by 3 with 3 minutes left, to win their first ever State Championship. The LCA coaching staff gave them the ball back, with the defensive play calling, after the failed scoring drive, with 1 minute left.

 

Again, I think the LCA coaching staff did not think that LCA could win in OT, due to so many players playing both ways and Beechwood players, for the most part, not playing both ways. I for one think it was the right call at the time. It easy to say now that they should have kicked it. But, I think that it was right at the time.

What a great game, and we definately had the two best teams in class A in the finals. I know Beechwood won, but as much as people are questioning the LCA coach for playcalling I was wondering why Beechwood didn't play more smashmouth offensively and keep the ball away from LCA. They won I guess that's all that matters. Congratulations on outstanding seasons to both teams, and has been said before it's a shame someone had to lose.

In fairness to Podgie only the last call was in question. He and no one who knows anything about football could possibly criticize the LCA staff's overall in-game coaching. The on side kick was a master stroke and set Beechwood back on their heels. The pass plays were brilliantly designed and timely called.

However, I must agree with Guru that taking the tie was the better option and I don't see how even the most ardent Beechwood fan could doubt that LCA was playing better at that point in the game.

If the coach was inclined to go for the win, a run, had it failed, would have backed Beechwood up near the goal. I have to think Beechwood would have played conservatively and LCA would have stopped the run and gotten another chance. Beechwood is not famous for their punting (or kick-off) game and LCA would have been back in field goal range after the punt.

I realize it is easy to second guess, however, the LCA coach second guessed his own play call,so it is fair game.

In the NFL I believe anyone can catch a ball tipped by the defense. In this case it was the offense that touched the ball making it akin to 2 forward passes on the same play.

Was # 15 Gaffney? IMHO he was the best player on the field.

Well, whatever else happens my granddaughter gets a State Championship jacket. I have a feeling the LCA faithful will be getting one next year.

I think that the difference between being very good and being great is a very thin line. LCA is a very good team, and that thin line was that one play. If they scored they, and the coach, would be seen as great. Everyone would be saying that Coach Raines was the best coach ever for that play call, they would be saying that he was the gutsiest coach ever, and that he knew how to beat Beechwood. But, the score did not happen, and now he is not great, and everyone is questioning the call.

 

I don't think there was a right call in that situation. I would have definitely called a running play, but that is what everyone would have expected, and it may have failed miserably. The pass was unexpected, so it could have caught the defense off guard, and would have been seen by many coaches as a smart call. The FG was the safe call, if it had been missed, no one would have questioned the call. But, many would have speculated that why would you not go for it on the one yard line. I would venture to say if the ball was on the 10 yard line, Coach Raines would have kicked it, but on the one he thought he had the momentum and thought he could catch the secondary off guard.

 

There is no right answer. I will have to just say that Coach Raines is a much more qualified football coach then me and that he made the call that he thought was right.

:thumb: I agree Ram, I don't think that anyone should question Coach Rains. His accomplishments in High School Coaching through the years speak for itself. Also, the job that the man has done at LCA in the relatively short time that he has been there speaks volumes.

I don't mind going for the win, however, I thought the choice would have been to pound it with Hayden. Then if you don't make it they have 99 1/2 yards to go.

 

But a FG is probably the logical the call.

 

Great coaches have to make the tough calls and Rains will stick with the decision and feel good about it.
