I agree with the 1st part, but defining who is and who isn't a DII team would be the coaches job. However, I feel strongly that AAU should legislate a 2 tournament style like Florida and other states have to determine their DII champion.

 

I agree with Qryche, that was an impressive run by the Ogle led Flash. He is a great coach. I'm sure most of those teams weren't used to that in your grill, man to man defense his teams play.

River City has played in a total now of 3 tournaments. When they were entered, it was debated whether to play DI or DII. However, one boy quit for financial reasons, which is understandable and another is just now returning from a broken ankle in Feb.. So, it was thought that depth would be an issue. However, the kids are in excellent condition and are fine players. It's my opinion that they'd have done fine in DI. I talked with several coaches who asked the age of the boys and I told them that there are 3 grade exceptions per AAU guidelines. It's been stated here before the need to utilize the 3 grade exceptions to compete at a high level and I know that some didn't have any. It's difficult to compete at that rate. Other than the PG, the guards are 5'10". Difficult matchup for alot of the teams that were in DII.

As for the Wolfpack, we picked the wrong game to go cold shooting. We needed the outside shot to beat the Canes as they really packed the zone in. In the end, their size and athleticism was just too much. We spotted them a 10 point lead early and that ended up being the difference.

I just dont see the Wolfpack having any real shooters except for the Mays kid. (My friend and I watched Mays hit 9 three pointers in a row during warmups, pretty impressive.) That team consist of 6 or 7 kids that all have similar skills and attributes. They are tall, athletic and not great shooters. They get to the rim and utilize their skills this way. I am sure it was hard for them to get to the rim against the HUGE River City team who packed it in.

 

McGovney is really a great player who is fun to watch though, I caught myself many times turning around and watching the Pack on the main court. McClendon should be fun to watch next year too while playing for Holmes.

Louisville Rising Stars defeated G-town Thunder 59-56 in what was probably a barnburner.

 

The semifinals was a barnburner. Mason Monroe had a 3-pointer with about 12 seconds left go halfway down but spin out that would have tied it. The Thunder had another chance to tie it with the final shot, but it missed. Credit the Rising Stars and # 32 -- don't know his name. He scored 25 points and hit all the big shots, no matter what defense the Thunder tried. The Thunder led by 6 (25-19) but when you give up 40 in a half, you are going to have trouble winning.

 

All in all, it was a disappointing weekend for the Thunder, only because they went down to the wire with The Ville in the first game, losing 54-52 but couldn't get back to the rematch. But, again, there is no shame in losing to the Rising Stars. We knew going in they would be tough.

 

Other D1 comments.... Congratulations to The Ville. They proved to be the class of D1 -- as expected. And Hoop Dreams was an absolute mess. They have some individual talent, but were woeful throughout the tournament, never having a chance to win a game. Plus, with about 7-8 minutes on the clock before the semis against The Ville, they only had about 5-6 kids at the game. And, their best player Larry Morton didn't even show up on time. Then, they went out and got beat 65-32 and it wasn't even that close -- they were down 26-3 at one point and 41-12 at halftime. It was kind of sad to see that much talent look that bad.

 

By the way, the KBA put the 2 13U teams that are playing up this weekend in the 14U D2 in the same pool -- Thunder vs. The Ville Saturday morning. Look for Scott County to take the 14U D2 with Tamron Manning leading the way.

If you were at the game, I would not say that any Wolfpack player sat the bench most of the time. I think the Wolfpack coaching does a very good job rotating kids. Mays is a very good shooter but his release is a little slow. This can lead to a lot of blocks against an athletic, tall team like River City.

 

All and all, the Wolfpack had a tremendous weekend.

They have now switch up the pools and the Northern KY Huskies have been swapped into the pool with the Thunder instead of The Ville. I was actually looking forward to playing The Ville again. Anybody got any information on the Huskies?

NKY Wildcats U9 third grade team is looking for a few big kids to go to D2 nationals with them in Detroit. We have four solid gaurds/small forwards. Looking for some bangers. We are going to play in some tournaments threw out the summer to stay fresh and to gel.

Rainman, The Thunder and Ville is in different pools as of Monday evening. Changes were made so the couldn't meet until tournament play. G-town plays in pool 4 with Truth Select, Warren Co. Shooting Stars, and N Ky Huskies. G Town plays Truth Select, Friday night at 7:00 pm. The Ville has played the Truth Select 14u team a couple of times this year playing up at Hoops, their a good team. I don't know much about the rest of the teams in your pool.

How do you think the G-town Thunder and The Ville will do in 14U this weekend? Will the Thunder have all of their players? Are they all from Scott County (with the exception of T. Gover )?

Last year when both teams played up in 13 D2 (they were obviously 6th graders last year), The Ville beat the Thunder by 1 in the quarterfinals, so both teams did well. From the looks of it, I think the Thunder have a real tough pool this year. The Ville are in a 3-team pool, so they will advance to tournament play irregardless while the Thunder will need to be in the top 2 of thier pool to advance.

 

As far as the makeup of the Thunder, 6 are from Georgetown, 1 from Lexington, 2 from Falmouth, 1 from Somerset, 1 from Mt. Sterling and there will be one from your neck of woods joining this weekend, but I am guessing with your question you were probably already aware. :ylsuper:
