January 25, 200818 yr That is EXACTLY what I'm saying. I was referring to G-town "picking-up" players, and players/coaches jumping teams. Goodness guys. I miss a couple of days looking at posts on here and all hell breaks loose regarding the Thunder. Portwood might play with the Warriors in state and nationals and is eligible to play because he was held back last year, but the Warriors understand the Thunder will come first. Gover (and Dishman) played with the Thunder in a tournament in August in Louisville and Gover was told at that time he was more than welcome to join the team this year IF Somerset doesn't put anything together. But, let's get one thing straight, the Thunder does not recruit kids. Yes, changes have been made over the years, but the kids who have been added came through requests from their parents calling the coach, not vice versa. From talking to the Thunder coach, other teams are always trying to get his kids. 2 years ago, the Tarheels practically begged Portwood to come play for them. What some people don't understand is Portwood has played for the Thunder since he was 7.

Knowing that, they are truly one of the best "community" teams or D2, if they wanted to be, in the state and they hold their own at the D1 level.

I will agree, most come from Scott Co and Steve Page has done a great job with those kids down there for the Thunder. I know they have the Monroe kid from PC and I beleive another boy from Lexington but for the most part it is kids from Scott Co. If anything, like Rainman said, other teams are begging for his players. My only point in my earlier post about Portwood is that he is a good enough player to compete with 13U or 7th graders and maybe even 8th graders so why would he lower himself to play against 6th graders 12U? Now I understand, they want to win at the National level and that is fine and if the competition at Nationals for 12U is at Portwood's talent level and he is eligible then best of luck to him. But let it be said, that kid can play with kids his own age and older as can most of those boys on the Thunder. As far as recruiting Gover, nothing wrong with saying hey your more than welcome to join us. Even if there was a " wink, wink" when saying it. . He's a top 5 guard in the state at his age level so if he wanted to step it up and play D-1 basketball I would say the Thunder are a great fit for him. To have Gover/Monroe in the backcourt would be sick. Best of luck to all these kids in the State and National tournaments.
