If a school (CCMS???) program isn't getting the job done, not sure how the AAU team helps. It may help the individual become a better player, but in the end the program as a whole will not get any better. That starts with the administration and them putting someone in the position that knows what they are doing and can teach the necessary skills to their players to make them better.

 

qryche11 you said that you have 4 boys that will not be going to high school with the other team members. If you can find 4 others from your school to play with the 6 you got, then why not take the other 4? Not doubting what you say, but there is a reason 4 kids were asked and 4 were not asked.

 

Don't get me wrong, I like AAU basketball and it has plenty of good to go with it. However, I think that a governing body of basketball needs to step in and make a set of guidelines that everyone has to follow.

 

I WOULD never want to keep a kid down and not allow him to have every opportunity that is presented to him. However, there are parameters that should and need to be followed.

My youngest son is a 2nd grader and is a top notch athlete, great build, great mind, great athlete. He has been recruited (without the use of a better word) to play on AAU basketball and baseball teams and he is a 2nd grader this school year. He plays football, basketball, and baseball and has had a great deal of success in all three sports. I just think at age 7 or in 2nd grade my son doesn't need to be recruited. We practice all the time and he is very dedicated for his age and I am proud of him for that. I do want him to be a kid and do kid things though!!!

 

Luckily for him, I have been around and know a lot of people and I like to think I know what is best for him. I am the one the coaches are talking to mainly, but it is quite funny at times what I have been told in order to try and get my son to play on a team and this is for 2nd/3rd grade generally. It CAN & DOES get out of hand!

Our kids have played together since 2nd grade. All of our kids attend the same school. We have probably played 300 games together, including AAU and USSSA state and national tournaments. Our kids just finished 2nd in the

6TH grade Middle School state tournament. Our county has 9,000 people, our town has 2,000 people and our graduating classes are usually aound 100. Does it help or make a difference if your school plays together??.... you judge for yourself.

Let me clarify a little, our kids play together 80% of the time and it has made a difference... we combined with the Somerset Future and finished 2nd in the USSSA Nationals. One of our kids will play with the VILLE this summer, a couple of other will probably play with other teams as well and we plan a return trip with the Future. If you have a child with DI potential they need to play with a team at the highest level when possible..... I do not want to hold one of our kids back but I want him to play with us as much as possible. To compete on the national level you have to take kids from other areas just like everyone else. So basically you need to see what your goals are realistically, and then decide the proper course of action. I do not feel that their is a right or wrong way. I hope everyone has a great season.

There is no governing body that's going to change that because AAU allows athletes to prepare their game for high school and high school coaches and athletic directors know this. Everyone complains about AAU when their son or daughter gets jilted or the team doesn't do what they want, but the bottom line is this. AAU provides a competitive arena for players who want to excel in the sport to do just that!

Any BCI results this weekend in 13U? I really wish our NKY Warriors would have entered this tournament with teh Tar Heels/Wolfpack/Firehawks/Fleming Co, etc Our games up at Sportsplus just keep getting more ridiculous each week. Basically half the teams are decent 6th grade teams playing up in our division. Cant wait for the season to be over to be honest so they can start playing better competition. Next week they do have the Tar Heels at home. However, I know the Tar Heels play a bunch of tourneys and miss some of their league games up there so hopefully they will be able to make this game next Sunday.

 

With no Tar Heels in the tourney, the Firehawks and Wolfpack played twice at BCI. Wolfpack won both but the championship was only 10 points. These two teams also played twice at Mt Zion (4 times in one weekend is just way too much). Wolfpack won both of these also. The finals was not real close as the Firehawks had just finished an amazing comeback against the Old Spice Red Zone.

 

On a side note, Christian McClendon played with the Wolfpack at BCI. His athleticism is amazing. He will be a great addition to this already strong team.

 

Now that the Mt Zion league is over, I am looking forward to seeing how the Wolfpack will do against the Ville, Thunder, Warriors and the other strong U13 teams.

Congratulations to the U12, U13 & U14 Wolfpack teams, they each took their respective league championships at SOAS Mt. Zion. (U11 team forfeited the tournament due to them having an average margin of victory over 30 points during the regular season) I believe U11 - U13 will all be at BCI this weekend and HOOPS next weekend. As well U10 - U14 Wolfpack will be represented at the Stallions Stampede in Scott County. It will be nice to play some "new" competition after having played the same teams 2 and 3 times for most of the teams.

 

Any word on who else might be playing at the BCI this weekend and who is in the Stallions Stampede the last week of February????

Our boys would have played them in back to back games but we had already played that team twice and destroyed them and some of the kids couldnt stay. I dont know, maybe they showed up late but I just thought it was strange. Now hearing the TarHeels didnt play in the BCI, just curious where they were this weekend as they typically play every weekend.

The NKY Warriors 13U played out there as the Rockets 2 yrs and got kind of tired of playing the same teams all the time and wanted a change. Change of scenery has been nice but competition level hasnt over past 2 winter seasons. I would think they may go back out and play off Mt. Zion road next year in the 14U but not my call.

 

If any 13U teams want to set up some games during FEb/March PM me because we have gym capability and it would probably just be deal where you pay the ref $25 for the game.

Apparently some of you only read and take from posts what you want. I would suggest to some of you to read everything a person posts.

 

I NEVER said AAU was a bad thing, go and read the posts. Trust me on this, this is not a dad who's kid got jilted, TRUST me! I have coached AAU teams, I have reffed for AAU tourneys, I have promoted AAU.

 

Again, it can be a very good thing. It also can be a detriment to certain HS coaches and programs because of the tension caused with some AAU coaches. AAU is BIG business, but it isn't as great as some of you want to make it out to be and isn't as liked by as many coaches across the nation as you think. This is not just a KY issue, trust me.

 

My point was made by southernkyhoops, you can form and keep a team together with kids from the same school and be successful if you try. Now, for those places where there isn't AAU, then go ahead and do what you have to do. Just do not tell me it cannot be done, because it can be.

I think you would be pleasantly surprised with the level of competition especially at the U13 level at SOAS Mt. Zion. The Wolfpack was very good in that division but there were 3 or 4 teams below them that competed and had a good game and disrupted the standings at times.

Thats good to hear. I know the Flash have improved alot with the addition of Nussbaum. The Blaze seem to be a decent group of kids. Firehawks we have played and are competetive as well.

Tubbycat, I believe the reason is those 4 kids have been playing with the others since 3rd grade and to just move them off the team it wouldnt be right. NOt to mention the parents are all friends and everyone gets along very well. Those boys all live in Ft. Thomas and also play football/baseball together. However, with that said it doesnt mean that in the summer or next season as 14U that there isnt an all Highlands team formed because like I said there are 3/4 more kids that could fill out the roster. I know a couple of those boys already fill in for the Warriors when kids are out of town or not able to make games.

 

There are a couple kids on the 7th grade HMS school team that NEED to play AAU ball to get better and pick up the speed of the game so in going forward I do think there might be something done to get the group playing competetive AAU together in some fashion.
