Which middle school do all of the kids on the Thunder attend?

 

Rainman will prbly correct me but I believe Georgetown Middle and Scott Co Middle school. I think there is another middle school called Royal Spring down there. WOW....cant imagine 3 middle schools feeding into one high school. Wish we were that lucky at Highlands.

Then there are the 2 from Pendleton (Sharp Middle). No wonder Scott County rocks at the HS level. 3 middle schools feed into 1 HS...Amazing.

Im not so sure 2 anymore from PC. I think Jackson Strong is not playing this season according to a discussion I had with Monroe's Dad. I may be wrong though.

In response to several of the previous posts, here's some information.

 

Strong has changed his mind and has decided to play with the Thunder. The team consists of 7 kids from Georgetown, 1 from Mt. Sterling, 2 from Falmouth and 2 from Lexington.

 

By the way, it was mentioned Monroe and Gover would make a great guard combo. The transfer from New Hampshire (Richardson) is on both of their levels, and currently plays point guard for the Thunder and Scott County Middle 7th and 8th grades. In Louisville in August, Gover slotted into a starting lineup for the Thunder that included Monroe, Gover, Richardson, Portwood and McFarland.

 

As far as Portwood, he starts on both the 7th and 8th grade teams at Scott County Middle. Yes, he can definitely compete against 7th grade or 8th grade kids. That's why he always play with the Thunder and will only play with the Warriors in big events -- IF he even decides to do that.

I can tell you Coach Page does not recruit kids. Monroe's father seeked G-Town Thunder out along with the N. KY Tarheels out 4-5 years ago. He wanted his son to play AAU basketball and he tried out for the Thunder and was accepted on the team. I am not 100% sure but I believe Monroe was the first non Georgetown kid to play on the team.

For the record the Quin "Q" Richardson kid was MVP of that tournament in Louisville " The Thrill In The Ville" along with all-tournament team members from the Thunder Monroe, Gover and McFarland. Richardson is that good and I would put him right there with Quick as being one of the top kids in this age group in the state. He is a Stud and if you have not seen him play you will be hearing alot about this young man in the near future.

That is correct. Mason was the first non-Georgetown kid on the team. And, by the way, the Thunder finished 2nd in the state (when there was only one classification, meaning not a separate D1 and D2) in 9U with only Georgetown kids. 4 of the 5 starters from that team remain on the Thunder today.

It would be nice to see AAU programs at every school so that you didn't have different kids from different schools always competing together. SO ALL kids who want them have the opportunities that it seems select or chosen kids get! It cannot and doesn't happen b/c some schools obviously put more into their basketball programs and their youth programs then others do.

 

I just think that kids should play with the kids they are going to be playing with later on, if that is possible. A kid or a parent should not have to choose between two teams, a school team and an AAU team. That happens quite a bit and I do no think it is a good thing.

 

AAU basketball can be a great thing and it has helped our state with basketball, but there is a downside to it as well. Sometimes loyalty can be called into question I can tell you that from first hand experience!

 

If a kid is good enough to play than by all means let him play, but remember where he came from and don't forget what color YOUR school is in the process!

Good thought, but what about kids who are in a middle school system that won't go to the feeder high school. EX - a kid attends a parochial school but will attend public high school or vice versa. Or a kid will go where his parents went to high school regardless of where they live.

 

And the other argument to your post, what about the school programs that are just not teaching kids how to get better (CCMS program)?? The way those kids get better and develop is by playing AAU?

Good points but a kid if good enough should have the chance to make a team that is going to compete at National level and I will leave it at that. If you can get a group of kids from same school developed early enough to compete in AAU then that is great. I think that has been the goal of my son's AAU team as they have 6 kids who all have been in the same class playing together for the past 3/4 seasons in AAU. In fact, there are 4 other boys who wont be going to High School with them but if they decided to not play I am sure we could find 4 other boys in the same class that could compete.

 

HMS 7th has 8 kids who have competed in AAU ball the past 3/4 yrs and 1 boy who has played past 2 yrs. Maybe one of the most athletic kids on the team and the 10th player mentioned here has not played any AAU ball and I think that is why he is behind the rest of them as far as Basketball IQ. In AAU you develop good fundamentals like boxing out, taking care of the basketball, reacting to quick aggressive pressing. This young man struggles at all of these things but still scores and rebounds through pure athleticism. I would take these 10 kids and play any AAU team. If they win great, if they lose by 8 to 10 and get better while playing even better.

Any BCI results this weekend in 13U? I really wish our NKY Warriors would have entered this tournament with teh Tar Heels/Wolfpack/Firehawks/Fleming Co, etc Our games up at Sportsplus just keep getting more ridiculous each week. Basically half the teams are decent 6th grade teams playing up in our division. Cant wait for the season to be over to be honest so they can start playing better competition. Next week they do have the Tar Heels at home. However, I know the Tar Heels play a bunch of tourneys and miss some of their league games up there so hopefully they will be able to make this game next Sunday.
