The Newport game was the worst. We went in to the game thinking we was really going to give it to them. But they kept it close, had a few interceptions and I think one of them for a TD and our season was over.

I would think Bird fans would have picked the MUDD Bowl game with Cov Cath. I was there and the Bird fans seemed in shock after the game.

I believe that the correct term for this is "selective amnesia."

That's why the Mud Bowl has not been brought up by the HHS faithful... and now you've gone and mentioned it, setting off countless exacerbations of PTSD within Caketown. Way to go!

Ironically, I believe one Birdsfan did mention it. You guys gotta take the time to go back to the first page.
The most devastating loss I can remember in recent years was the 2002 playoff loss to Rockcastle County.

I have to agree the low point for HHS was the Eicher era...ugly.

I remember the 1989 Belfry overtime win vividly. This was the underrated HHS team breaking the 7 year span of no titles.

I remember that :D but I also remember the loss before that :(

Sorry I missed that it was already covered by a birds fan had already mentioned the Mud Bowl. Sorry for bring it up.

Could you imagine Dale with the 1986 squad that went 12-1 and lost to Danville in Double overtime in the playoffs. Man we were good!!!! I can still remember our halftime adjustments against Danville. Wow!!!!!!!

But you still lost, correct!!!??? Should have made those adjustmenst the first half. If you can beat them, hire them! Duffy went North is 88 after an 87 championship with the ADS!!!:dancingpa

Duffy went North in 88 after an 87 championship with the ADS!
And a few years later, he went South.
They were toe "Dark Years" of Highlands Football and having lived through them as a player I can tell you it was much darker from the inside than it was from the outside.

Jack was a good man, but wasn't the coach needed at that time. He would start players with less talent due to moral reasons and he ran talent off that didn't fit his mold of what a HHS player should be (guys that had tons of talent but might party too much).

Looking back on those teams, they were not bereft of talent. The '85 team had talent that should and could have done something if it had been coached properly. You had 4 players on that team that went on to play college football on scholarship (NCAA Division II - Hoffman, Hergott, Giglia, Monfort) and one player that went on to be the NCAA Division III Defensive Player of the Year (Bezold). The talent was there, but was never put into a system that allowed it to shine. The '85 team did beat the AAAA State Champion (back then it was State Champion vs. Jefferson County Champion), Lafayette (at Lafayette no less).

Also, with the way the playoff system was then there were no second chances. Newport had arguably their best teams since the '60's and Cov Cath's '85 team lost deep in the playoff's (Von Handorf's senior year).

I know almost nothing about Eicher, other than heresay I've heard from others, so I'll refrain from comment of any sort.

But for what it is worth, CovCath was the top ranked team in 84 and lost in the second round of the playoffs to Danville. It was a pretty big upset at the time.

In '85, CovCath and Highlands both failed to make the playoffs. Newport had a great team and won the old AAA east division in NKY. Lloyd won the West division of the district. Newport beat Lloyd in the playoffs that year. Pretty sure the Wildcats also lost to Danville the next round, but I'm really not sure who beat them.

CovCath didn't have a deep run in either 84 or 85 as I remember it.

Belfry beat them in Newport in the semifinals.

It has nothing to do with how good Danville was that year. It is how the adjustments were made at halftime that won't go public from this Bluebird!!!! As they say, what happened inside those walls will always stay inside those walls.

That's okay, CCH was probably a pretty solid team in 84 and 85. It was definately alot tougher to make the playoffs in those days than it is today when it was 1 team making the playoffs as to 4 teams making the playoffs. You couldn't take any weeks off back in that district setup.

I think all of HHS's loses are disappointing. I don't think, as long as I can remember that there's ever been a game in which HHS players, and/or fans think we are going down.
