He was the HC at Scott County before moving back to FT.

 

But to your point, that's why I think the Scott HS job is a perfect one for Coach Weinrich to go after. Build on the momentum and get that valuable head coaching experience. (not to mention bring over the ever-so-important work ethic and prove that all that's missing at all the schools in NKY is hard work. ) After that, if/when Dale decides the hang up the whistle, he'll be ready.

JO PA is a figure head at this point. Do you really think he knows what is going on during a game? He relies on his staff to make most of the decisions and I think Dale has a very good staff as well that he depends on for some key decisions.

 

Home loss that comes to my mind was the Lex Cath playoff loss two yrs ago. They had an excellent QB and a great gameplan. That Soph RB did a nice job also against us. That was tough to watch.

What about the Belfy win in 1979 in the semis. Probably the game that got Belfry's program over the hump.

 

I agree, and I remember it well. I just didn't know if I should bring it up in a Highlands thread. There are still some sore spots in HHS land about that one.

No disrespect to Coach Eicher, as he was a very nice man and had a wonderful family, but during my lifetime at least, I'd say the low point occurred during his watch.

The '75 HHS-CampCo game was at their place. The only wet cow pasture in NKY that night! (ouch...it still hurts!)

 

The two home losses in '74 were both painful. A 15-14 loss to NewCath and a 10-7 loss to Simon Kenton (ended up keeping us from the state playoffs...back in the day when you had to EARN the right to be in the playoffs!)

Frankly, I think Weinrich could handle the job at Highlands tomorrow if Dale was to retire (which isn't going to happen according to what Dale told me). He is the Asst Head coach and gets to provide a lot of input to Dale. If Brian was to be the next head coach at Highlands, without any head coaching experience, I'd be supportive of that move big time. Defense does win championships.

 

And DMZ, whats this game against Campbell Co about? I've seemed to forgotten all memories about it. LOL.

When Campbell Co beat the Birds in 73. (class of 74) I was already out of school and don't even remember if I was at the game, but since I married a Camel, class of 74, I have to listen to it at her class reunions and from time to time she just mentions it to aggravate me.

They were toe "Dark Years" of Highlands Football and having lived through them as a player I can tell you it was much darker from the inside than it was from the outside.

 

Jack was a good man, but wasn't the coach needed at that time. He would start players with less talent due to moral reasons and he ran talent off that didn't fit his mold of what a HHS player should be (guys that had tons of talent but might party too much).

 

Looking back on those teams, they were not bereft of talent. The '85 team had talent that should and could have done something if it had been coached properly. You had 4 players on that team that went on to play college football on scholarship (NCAA Division II - Hoffman, Hergott, Giglia, Monfort) and one player that went on to be the NCAA Division III Defensive Player of the Year (Bezold). The talent was there, but was never put into a system that allowed it to shine. The '85 team did beat the AAAA State Champion (back then it was State Champion vs. Jefferson County Champion), Lafayette (at Lafayette no less).

 

Also, with the way the playoff system was then there were no second chances. Newport had arguably their best teams since the '60's and Cov Cath's '85 team lost deep in the playoff's (Von Handorf's senior year).

I dont have a problem with his rationalization here. Are you saying that Highlands is a win at all cost program? If he made poor decisions with personnel during game situations outside of this rationalization then I can see why many folks were upset but if this was the only thing he did that ticked folks off then thats a problem.

 

I am not naive to think that kids are going to party but at the same time if the guy knew it was going on and disciplined them for it then he was being more than a coach.

No, it wasn't like that. He just wouldn't let go of pre-concieved notions that the kids that didn't fit his mold were still good kids that just needed to be lead. Highlands is not a win at all cost program, but we are also not a program of all choir boys. If an athlete worked hard during the off season, didn't get in trouble but hung with a certain crowd it would be held against them under Jack. Didn't matter if those players gave their all on the field and were good teammates, they were judged by other means than that.

 

The other scenario was players that were good kids he like dbut had troubles off the field might start beacuse their playing was good for their personal issues. No issues with this if those players were the best players, but that type of stuff outweighed their on the field contributions.

 

I have been in contact w/ Jack in the past few years and really like the man. He had good intentions, but his adherence to an inflexible offense and other things really were achilles heels for him. This is not meant as any slur to Jack.

My worst was the 1978 year Newport knock us out of going to state, and spoiled are chance's of a Three peat. I think is was 6-0 interception TD !!!

In 1980, we lost to Newport at home at Week 5 or so. Finished the season at 9-1 but missed the play-offs because we did not win our half of the district.
