We all know the tradition of the Highlands stadium. What are the most surprising losses over the years.

All that we have lost at Highlands.

Not a home loss, but the first one that comes to mind for me was Conner in 1983. We lose, the Melvin Miles Conner goes onto win it all. Should have been 3 straight.

 

We had our chances, an unfortunate penalty (offsides) changed the outcome of that one. I still cringe when I think about it; no one would have touched us if we got out of NKY.

How about when Lexington Catholic went to Highlands in 2005 and shut them out.

How about what a great time for a "negative thread" about a team. Nice! Very Nice!!!!:irked:

This does seem like a strange time for this thread, but here goes...

 

In recent years, here are some:

 

1. Last year's regular season loss to CCH on a last-second TD pass by the Colonels... the CCH receiver just barely caught the ball in-bounds in the end zone to win by 2 points. This snapped a pretty long regular season winning streak by HHS over CCH, and set up the postseason rematch at CCH, which they won en route to a state title.

 

2. The HHS loss to LexCath 17-0 in 2005, en route to LC's first state title. Although it was very impressive that HHS' defense held Justin Burke and LC to just 17 points on offense, the shutout of the 'Birds at home was definitely disappointing.

 

3. Back in 2001, defending state champ HHS was destroyed at home by Male in the second week of the season. The game was 30-0 Male, and was stopped at halftime due to a bad storm. Yikes!!! All in all, this one probably has to go down as the low-point for Highlands football in Fort Thomas.

 

 

NOW, with all that being said, it should be pointed out that Highlands has had a year of nothing but great moments and memories in 2007!!!

Don't agree with the bolded part my friend. No disrespect to Coach Eicher, as he was a very nice man and had a wonderful family, but during my lifetime at least, I'd say the low point occurred during his watch.

Speaking of Highland's home losses, does any teams have a winning record against HHS on that field?

 

Maybe the more appropriate question would be for Highalnds opponents to list their most disappointing losses to the Bluebirds on that field. I know I certainly would have no problem listing Belfry's 1989 overtime loss.

That's what happened when administration went out and hired a coach with no head coaching experience. If he did, it didn't show!!!!! I'm almost positive that will never happen again in my lifetime. Hope smiley turns out to be the Joe Paterno of High School football!!!!!

Could you imagine Dale with the 1986 squad that went 12-1 and lost to Danville in Double overtime in the playoffs. Man we were good!!!! I can still remember our halftime adjustments against Danville. Wow!!!!!!!

This is going back a few few years but the most disappointing loss for me was in 1969, I was just a wee one and my brother was playing. I didn't understand football but had never experienced a loss being a HHS fan. It was the Dixie game at home, don't remember much of the game, just remebering we lost and good ole Vi Gerding hugged me and told me that it was all a part of the game, we had to learn to lose to enjoy the winning...

This wasn't intended to be negative to Highlands. I appears a lot of NKY folks are on here and with all the rich tradition...there is always a little heartbreak.

 

What about the Belfy win in 1979 in the semis. Probably the game that got Belfry's program over the hump.

...and that's why Vi Gerding was such a special lady. Always positive and supportive, Win or Lose!

The most devastating loss I can remember in recent years was the 2002 playoff loss to Rockcastle County.

 

I have to agree the low point for HHS was the Eicher era...ugly.

 

I remember the 1989 Belfry overtime win vividly. This was the underrated HHS team breaking the 7 year span of no titles.
