Saw Coach Murphy at last weeks game with his lovely wife. What a great guy. What a legend. Charlie on ICN6 needs to get him for his show. NKY HS standout (Holmes)...UC record setting QB...legendary coach of HHS / Newport / Boone Cty.

The '84 team had Kowolenek, but he graduated in '85. He was a heck of a player for Newport.

'85 Team was even better than the '84: Gary Fields (Principal at Bowling Green HS btw), Eric Lanthorne, Jeff Schnelle, Jimmy Arthur, Jimmy Roberts and I might be wrong but Greg Schwitzer at QB. They had a real big offense line (Centers and Tackles; guards were thick and quick). Had a sophomore tailback that backed up Roberts that was good player. Joey Pangallo might have been on that team too. It was as good a team as Newport has had in the last 25 years (the team two years ago was good too).

It was a real good team.

Interesting tidbit about Gary Fields and being principal of BGHS. He was a very good Tight end if I remember right. Im sure he is excited about the matchup with Highlands.

I know there have been some good athletes go through Newport, but Steve Kowolenek might have been the best all round athlete I have ever seen. It didnt matter the sport, he was a stud on every surface, hardwood, turf, or the diamond!

He is either excited or sick to his stomach!!!!!

Stevie K. was good, no doubt, but Steve Fields in the 70's was the KING of sports at NHS. (is he related to the BGHS principal, Gary Fields???)

I hope my memory is correct, but didn't Steve Kowolenek play in the band during halftime?

You know what...something tells me you're onto something. I seem to remember one of teams having a starter play during halftime...and Newport would be the school.

Like i said before Danville was very, very good that year. If the same adjust ments would of been made in the 1st half this game wouldn't of went to overtime. Highlands would of won in regulation. The offense was called by a totally different coach in the 2nd half.

Can't say I agree. Played both sides that night, all night! Better team won IMO!:ylsuper:
