The Negative Impact of the 6 Class System

Featured Replies

A few things I have noticed.

One, it has thinned the depth some, and allowed some other schools to take advantage of opportunities that weren't there before...ala Frankfort.

Also, I think it may have thinned the competition for some schools ala Highlands.

6 is too many, and I think 5 may be better.

Well, there you go, that complaint has been solved.

Highlands is what class by numbers alone???

People can say what they want and they are opinions.

What I know is there are allot of kids who are happy about a 6 class system.

If there are happier players, fans and parents and more money for the schools, how bad can it be.

Well in my opinion there is still a problem and nobody will ever be able to compete with Trinity and X not in my life time. Some schools have a bigger budget and also have more kids to choose from or should we say pull from. Not knocking what is right but in 6A everyone is playing to be a semi finalist and 5A I think Highlands will be in the state finals for the umpteen years. I still disagree with the different rules the private schools have over the public schools. Does anyone know how many of the teams in the finals are Public VS private schools. I know I am opening up a big can but it is true, if my son wanted he could right now decide he wanted to go to Owensboro Catholic next year and we could say the reason we are doing it is because we changed religions and he would be eligible instantly as has happened in this town before recently. Not gripping because we got beat I just think there needs to be a level playing field for everyone and right now I just don't see it. It is almost like the BCS in a way but the BCS has killed college football because the best teams will not be playing again this year because they play in the SEC. The only thing we can hope for is Trinity or X one loses a little bit of enrollment and one of them falls to 5A so they can both win a state title every year instead of having to play each other every year to win one. HaHaHa! I think maybe they need to change the classes based on team size not school enrollment. BG had our team out numbered tonight I bet 2 to 1 and when you have a varsity number of 96 to a team with say 45 to 60 what are the odds that the smaller team will win the game. Evansville Reitz won the Indiana 5A title this year and when they walked on the field they had to start coming out with about 5 minutes left on the clock so the last guy out of the locker room could be on the side lines before the start of the game. How about teams are classified by performance then you would have better games and closer games. I really do not know how you fix it really would be hard in my opinion.

You are saying that there hasn't been any good competitive games???

Not for us so far in the playoffs.

Does anyone know how many of the teams in the finals are Public VS private schools.

Tonight's semifinal scores show the negative impact of spreading the talented teams out over 6 classes instead of 4. One would think that when you get to the Final 4 in the state for a class that the majority of games would be competitive. Unfortunately, we're seeing blowouts.

That's too bad. If the state championship is the first really good competitive game in the playoffs, its a problem.

I think that the move to 6 classes did definitely water down the playoff games this year. But the hope and belief of some is that as more teams get to create more excitement in their schools about football by making the playoffs, and as more teams get the benefit of getting to play/practice an extra week or 2, 3,4 or 5 weeks a year, that teams and programs through out the state will improve, thus making the playoff games tougher and improve the quality of football overall. There are a lot of folks that believe that the going to 4 classes played a large role in the improvement of Ky high school football in the last 10-15 years. I don't know that going to 6 classes will result in the hoped for results, but I think it is worth taking a shot at it at least for a while. Furthermore, there was a need to do something to straighten out the 4A and 1A disparity issue and a whole lot of folks were supporting 6 classes.

Frankly, if the level of competition doesn't improve in the playoffs in a reasonable period of time, I think the KHSAA should seriously consider looking at putting the biggest 16 schools in a one class and dividing the remaining schools into 4 classes.

I completely agree. And the different set of rules has taken away the best part of high school football, which used to be the excitement of seeing which team is "up" this year, happens to have a great group of kids, talent, who just happened to be at the same school and came together as a dedicated team to win state. The thrill of winning and watching those type of teams win is what high school sports is all about. Those teams still exist, but their season ends somewhere short of a championship as they run into schools with a different set of rules. So at their banquets they have to talk about their great season, but are denied talking about their championship. The 6A system did nothing to change that, just giving two more teams who have different rules a championship.

^Okay, you all need to take this "different rules" stuff to the appropriate forum, where the same subjects and topics have come up ad nauseum.

WCJ, why would your son even think about changing his religion and going to Owensboro Catholic when the public school he attends beat them 24-6 this year??

You want to know how to "fix" it so there is more parity? I'll tell you. Pass legislation that requires all schools to have the same number of boys enrolled, public or private. This will assure that some of the kids who've attended catholic schools all their life, playing football in the catholic system since 3rd grade, will be denied admission to X and T and hence will have no choice but to attend a public school, unless they elect to attend a private school that hasn't reached its max number of boys ( schools like Evangel Christian, Beth Haven, Portland Christian...you've heard of those football private powerhouses haven't you). Then after all the public schools and privates have achieved equal male enrollment within a .05 percentage point you seperate the schools into 2 classes, 1 for public and 1 for private. You seperate because, well, we all know that the privates will cheat by recruiting and it wouldn't be fair to let X and T dominate a 1 class football system.

Or, you can move to someplace like China where the government decides where you kids go to school and how many students are allowed to be enrolled in each school.

I don't know that going to 6 classes will result in the hoped for results, but I think it is worth taking a shot at it at least for a while.
The problem is that once we went to six classes, it's unlikely that we'll ever go back to four or cut back to five. The cat is out of the bag.

Furthermore, there was a need to do something to straighten out the 4A and 1A disparity issue and a whole lot of folks were supporting 6 classes.
Many for selfish reasons ...

Seriously, what was the disparity issue in Class A? Two of the four schools that were the most dominant are still in Class A.

Frankly, if the level of competition doesn't improve in the playoffs in a reasonable period of time, I think the KHSAA should seriously consider looking at putting the biggest 16 schools in a one class and dividing the remaining schools into 4 classes.
No objection there, but I'm afraid six classes is here to stay.
