The problem is that once we went to six classes, it's unlikely that we'll ever go back to four or cut back to five. The cat is out of the bag.

 

Is there any possibility of remaining at six classes, with the 16 (20, 24?) biggest schools in 6A, the same reduced number of smallest schools in 1A with the remaining schools divided evenly among 2A-5A? That would put roughly 40-47 teams in the middle classes.

I realize your tongue is planted firmly in your cheek, but I don't think that's the argument. Its not even about more schools winning state championships. The only real way for this to be fixed in the eyes of most is for Trinity and St. Xavier to be removed from competition. While I don't agree with that in the least, that's what most people would like. After they are removed, then most schools would happily go back to a four-class system.

That might be a conservative estimate.

If Paducah Tilghman, Fort Campbell, and Lone Oak all make the state title games...something is definitely wrong...It is totally watered down then in some classes everyone is stacked together!

 

Mayfield, Holy Cross, Beechwood, and Frankfort were all on one side the the Class A bracket...I mean at least get something right, KHSAA?

 

What, Mayfield doesn't make the finals so Fort Campbell and Lone Oak don’t deserve to? Both teams have beaten tough competition to get where they are and they DO deserve to play in the finals.

I think Fort Campbell would have made the finals in the old Class 2A alignment also.

Seriously, what was the disparity issue in Class A? Two of the four schools that were the most dominant are still in Class A.

No objection there, but I'm afraid six classes is here to stay.

 

I don't remember the exact numbers, but as I recall it the disparity from the smallest to largest A school last year (on a percentage basis) was pretty big.

 

And you may be right about not getting the cat back in. I just know that the KHSAA said they were going to look at it in two years. I would think that some of the big margins of victory will cause them to look at it after next year, or maybe they'll give it several more years to see if there is improvement being made in some programs. If I've noticed anything as I've "tracked" (some folks might say stalked) the KHSAA since the Mitchell case, the KHSAA is not afraid to be innovative and try things. For example, from what I understand from a soccer coach friend of mine (how's that for a hoot, me having a friend that coaches soccer), he said that the KHSAA wants to sit down with the soccer coaches to see if something can be done (rule wise) to reduce the number of DQs. They've talked to the NFHSAA about possible ideas and they are open to Ky making some experimental changes.

 

But you may be right. Who knows. As stated above, I do think the 6 classes has watered down the competition this year in the playoff games to date, but I'm not totally sure that we'd have much difference in opponents at the state games if we were at 4 classes this year. X would be playing T; we'd probably be playing BG; Belfry would be playing ?; and Beechwood or NCC would be playing ?. I think most of the actors would be the same, just a little different script.

Not for us so far in the playoffs.

 

Congrats, but you can't say there haven't been any good playoff games through out the state because of the 6 classes.

6 state champions, 6 teams with kids to have good memories for the rest of there life, Bad deal, I think not.

My guess is for them to "get what they wanted", would be for more public district and county schools to have an opportunity to enter the playoffs for a long enough period to where they had the fire and determination of the tradition rich private and independent programs in the state. Face it, forget about any other enrollment arguments, that's not for this forum, but those closely knit independent districts and legacy driven private programs have been successful for so long, it has become expected, and that challenge motivates and drives the kids. For some the newer public school success, there seems to at first be a questioning of "how the heck did we get here" and then maybe if they can hold on a few years, they do what Boyle did and refine a fine tradition. But this new system, as I see it, will ensure that all of the schools (or nearly all), keep playoff participation opportunites so that they aren't solely saved for the tradition rich programs of all types. But that's just a guess, who knows.
