Rumblings around Clear Channel

Looks like they are going to be making some more cuts...promotions and sales more than anything.

Gregg Doyel hasn't been on Sunday Morning SportsTalk in a few weeks. Why? He quit...said it wasn't working out due to time constraints and so forth. They said he needed to do it. He did for a few more weeks then just quit. In addition, he wanted to be compensated for his blog. CC said no...so he just quit. Go to his blog and you won't see anything on it.

Big Dog Lewis's first book got ratings of essentially zero. Cutler will do better, but how much.

Andy Furman's show now has surpassed Lance McAlister's show in ratings. I am not sure if he was higher before, but it is now.

I would think that losing the Angry Guys has hurt Lance. Why?

If one drives to work and listens to the Angries, and gets out of car and then after work turns car on...who is on radio? Furman.

Sounds like Cumulus would like to bring Lance in to their programming.

I have worked in many major markets including Detroit, which is one of the most competitive radio markets in the country, and I realy enjoy sports talk radio. Lance is probably one of the best sports talk hosts I have heard around the country if not the best.

Doyel clearly was only doing this to resume build for a nationally syndicated show.

Where? Who knows?

Lance has been working all year without a contract. I'm hearing he will give CC first run at keeping him, but after the last trend I'm not sure that's going to work out. There has been talk since I was hired at Cumulus that 96.5 would go all sports. Add Dan Patrick after the Angries and Lance before Furman and there you go...

And to be fair the latest numbers released were only a monthly trend and not a quarterly book. Trends can not be used as a sales tool, and are all but meaningless in the business...

Not to mention, I'd think 96.5 will be someone's local flagship station before long. :sssh:

Clear Channel Cincy is in a world of hurt for about 50 reasons and nearly all of them are self-inflicted. They have been so poorly run from the top down that you almost couldn't make it up.

They would be wise to sell what they can, but they don't seem to want to pull the trigger. And it's not just Cincinnati. They have poorly run clusters in markets all over the country...

One of the ironies of Clear Channel is that they are owned by Red McCombs who is one of the largest car dealers in the country and yet he does ZERO advertising on radio.

I'm done with local sports talk. I happened to tune in yesterday evening because the Bengals whipped a decent team that has a legit shot at the playoffs, and all I hear is complaining about Chad's TD celebration. The chronic depressive attitude by the onair people has worn thin.

Don't underestimate what Internet and things like BGP are doing to talk radio. I was, at one time, a 6-7 hour a day WLW listener. I liked the debate on talk radio. Called in 3 times.

Now I don't. UNLESS I am in my car, would rather come on here and debate with you fine people (and Gametime):D than to listen to the yahoos on radio.

I was wondering why Greg Blog wasn't up anymore.

Never once have I claimed to be a fine person... :fire:

Or instead of Bengals talk you could listen to one half of the angry guys talk about college basketball.

No matter who is on what station we need two stations of sports talk, otherwise we are going to get some garbage forced down our throat. Regardless of what you think about any one sports talk host, the great news is you have a choice. For example, when Furman talks about baseball in the 50s I go to Lance, when Lance starts playing one of his games I switch back to Furman. Or, if I want to laugh about something that may or may not have anything to do with sports I will tune into the Angry Guys variety show, if I want hard core sports talk I will tune into the Cutman (and I am with the Cutman 90% of the time because when you have a choice the Angries aren't so good).

Bravo!
