My understanding is that it is a private non-profit, funded totally by ticket sales from events and then the schools pay dues that goes to pay for catastrophic insurance. There has never been a tax appropriation for the KHSAA.

Schools pay dues. Last I looked, I pay a school tax.

I like it. Very nice.

Do you think its just a matter of time before we start seeing the Papa John's State Title Championships, etc? If they really wanted to squeeze some money out, they could even get local sponsors for every playoff game each year. I seriously doubt that is the case. Lets just hope that High School is not heading in the path of the BCS in College. IMHO, College BCS is not the answer. I would hate to see that, or anything even close to it in High School.

Actually they do sell sponsorships for the State Football Championships have for several years (3/4??) as I recall. Also, they have done it for boys basketball. I believe National City is the title sponsor or was.

I still like the horse plate(with the steeples), even though the energy that comes from these mountains generates more money for the state than any other industry, and deserve at least a mention on a plate, and more than some I've seen. ;) But we'll just have to continue playing our "mountain" ball, as some like to call it! :thumb:

I am all for a big black lump of coal on the plates...it would make it harder for the cops to read the kentucky blue numbers

How about:

The quad grande, no foam, peppermint, low fat, ad vanilla, 190 degree, latte, extra whip, two splenda, one sugar, decaf, in a vente cup, Starbucks, Commonwealth Playoffs and Championship, sponsored by Depends, I can't hold my coffee in this cold Bowl

Let's see them get that on a tee shirt!

Wonder if it was the same group that okay'd the smiling sun on the license plates...

My partner and I generate a fair amount, not only from coal, but from crude oil and natural gas as well, so it wouldn't necessarily have to be a lump of coal. A multi-colored flame of energy would look at least as good as some of the logo's I've seen on the plates, although not with quite the effect you desire, birdman. ;) And, of course, we'll keep "mountain" ball alive whether we get that plate or not. :thumb:

A stretch at the absolute best, unless it can be documented that the Board of Education actually paid those dues. Your school taxes go to the Board office unless the system has changed.

Wouldn't a school's KHSAA dues normally come from the sports budget and not the general fund?

I believe their relationship with the KBE is only an arrangement, as I understand it, whereby they run school-boy athletics as they see fit, while obligated to abide by Board regulations as it relates to academics. They seemingly operate as their members dictate, while consequences, apparently, are shielded by the Board for the most part, except when enforcement of their rules ventures onto inconsistent ground, when it seems they must stand by themsleves. That's the way I've managed to put that puzzle together over the years, so please, someone correct me if I'm wrong.

As I understand it, the KHSAA is a separate, non-profit corporation that on an annual basis is appointed by the State Board of Education as its agent to run high school athletics. Any year, the State Board of Education can elect not to renew its agency relationship with the KHSAA (although they'd have to do it themselves or find some other agent to do it. Rather than those options, the State Board currently is exerting more oversight over things going on at the KHSAA to change it the way they want it to be).

I don't know the exact numbers, but I'm told a large percentage of the dues paid by member schools is used by the KHSAA to purchase catastrophic insurance for the schools' (not the KHSAA's) student athletes. To the extent the dues are generated from local taxes and it became an issue, I guess the KHSAA could tell the schools to keep their dues and have the schools purchase the catastrophic insurance themselves. I'm sure it would be much more expensive that way however. Thus the current method makes the most sense.

Most of the KHSAA revenues come from the championship events. If we want to have increased enforcement and compliance of the rules (as most folks have been clamoring for) that takes more revenues to pay for the increased legal, investigative and administrative costs. If it takes naming the championship events after corporate sponsors to make that happen, I'm all for it. As Sweep pointed out, the kids playing in the championship events couldn't give hoot a in Hades what the events are called, so why should the adults get worked up over it? (I know the answer to that and its not complimentary).

They can call it anything they want, as long as they start treating it as good as they do the sweet 16. Football teams get nothing, no food, not t shirts, some travel based off of number class they are in and that is it. Basketball gets put up in the Hyatt, eats buffet meals all days, gets t shirts and maybe more. would love to hear from some baskeball people on what all they got. The most embarassing thing in the entire situation is the trophy. Basketball gets this 5 foot tall trophy and an huge intro at the game. Football gets a 1 and a half foot trophy and i don't even know if the new design has a ball on it. It's ashame that the KHSAA cannot do things equal in Championships but yet all their changes and talk is all based off of equality. HUH!

Sweet 16 teams don't get the treatment you describe. Teams aren't put up in the Hyatt ... they're dispersed in various hotels throughout Lexington. I believe they take care of their own meals, and their stay is only paid for through the day they're eliminated from the tournament.

I realize people think basketball gets preferential treatment in this state, but let's not go overboard ...

Thanks for clearing things up westsider! I did however see that you failed to comment on the trophy issue. I am not at all jealous of this, I just think that all sports should get the monster trophy. I have been around to see many state trophies past out, and only 1, basketball, is that nice. I just think it is a crime to award one beauty of a trophy in one sport and then award a larger version of the district trophy in ALL of the other sports. Get a starving artist somewhere and have them design a gem of a trophy for all sports and then the KHSAA can truly say that they are in it for "ALL KIDS"!!!!

To me, it isn't that big an issue ...

Me either. I like the football trophy very much. I don't even know what the basketball trophy looks like, nor do I care. Non issue to me.

Thanks for bringing it up. It will now be called the Commonwealth Bourbon Bowl Playoffs sponsored by Jim Beam, and all first downs will be Makers Mark, with a game ball from Red Man.

Looks like they could work "Unbridled Spirit" into this somehow...
