Commonwealth Gridiron Bowl

Featured Replies

Actually Prep Bowl is owned by the Detroit Catholic Schools. I am told that's one of the reasons that KHSAA went away from that.

They've been playing the Prep Bowl in Chicago for 74 years now. Sounds like the Detroiters are just a little late.

Wonder who is paid out of state tax dollars that is involved in athletics. Don't think anyone at KHSAA is.

What then is the source of their pay?

Who really cares what they call it. In 20 yrs theres not a darn kid who played in this years state championship game going to remember that they played in the Commonwealth Girdle Bowl. Now what they might remember is every play and every score during that game and more importantly who won. Now that is what is important.

Just be glad it still refers to the Commonwealth of Kentucky and doesn't have a corporate sponsored name, yet.

Thanks for bringing it up. It will now be called the Commonwealth Bourbon Bowl Playoffs sponsored by Jim Beam, and all first downs will be Makers Mark, with a game ball from Red Man.

Especially since the folks in Illinois own the trademark on Prep Bowl (season-ending championship game between the winner of the Chicago public-school playoffs and the winner of Chicagoland's Catholic Metro Conference.

Not the Catholic Metro Conference but the Chicago Catholic League. Some of the schools are suburban schools but those are not currently eligible for the Prep Bowl. My son's school is part of the Blue Division of that League.

The Catholic schools that do not make the quarterfinal round that are part of the original Chicago Catholic League are eligible for the Prep Bowl.

This year, the winner was Chicago's St. Rita High School. They are going to play Cincinnati St. Xavier in the Herbstreit next year.

According to the best available info I could find, the CCL changed its name several years ago. Then again, it's the interwebs ... can you really believe anything on it/them?

Trust me, it has not been changed. The Chicago Catholic League is alive and well. All five teams in the Blue Division made the Playoffs:

Mt. Carmel in 8A

Loyola in 8A

Brother Rice in 8A

St. Rita in 7A

Providence in 6A (my son's school)

There are also teams in the White Division and the Green Division. After next year, they will go back to 2 divisions. It is a conference of the Haves (Blue Division) and the Have-Nots (Green and White).

Wonder if it was the same group that okay'd the smiling sun on the license plates...

I still like the horse plate(with the steeples), even though the energy that comes from these mountains generates more money for the state than any other industry, and deserve at least a mention on a plate, and more than some I've seen. ;) But we'll just have to continue playing our "mountain" ball, as some like to call it! :thumb:

Chicago does have their fair share of the wealth!

What then is the source of their pay?

My understanding is that it is a private non-profit, funded totally by ticket sales from events and then the schools pay dues that goes to pay for catastrophic insurance. There has never been a tax appropriation for the KHSAA.

the Commonwealth Gridiron Bowl is really growing on me. I'm glad Commonwealth is in there, that word speaks volumes and carries a unique significance. And Gridiron just sounds cool.

I like it. :thumb:

Thank you. Interesting.....Are they an arm of the Board of Education? If so, how can they be a private, non-profit (corporation)?..... Just asking. No big deal. Not really on topic.

I believe their relationship with the KBE is only an arrangement, as I understand it, whereby they run school-boy athletics as they see fit, while obligated to abide by Board regulations as it relates to academics. They seemingly operate as their members dictate, while consequences, apparently, are shielded by the Board for the most part, except when enforcement of their rules ventures onto inconsistent ground, when it seems they must stand by themsleves. That's the way I've managed to put that puzzle together over the years, so please, someone correct me if I'm wrong.
