Reds, Cordero reach preliminary agreement

Featured Replies

What do you mean? Reds gave him 3 years at 8.5 million didn't they? He filled for FA.

I was saying I rather give Cordero 11 Million to hopefully save 40 plus games instead of resigning Milton.

If they resigned Milton I would have written a hate letter to Wayne.

Salary increases spent all of the Milton "savings". And who in the hell is going to resign Milton at 8.5 anyway...

I completely agree with you. Back when the originally signed him I don't think there was much out there and the Reds just needed a SP badly. He wasn't worth 8.5 back then.

I didn't realize though the Reds have already spent the saved money.

Interesting sounds like the Brew Crew offered 42 Mill and came up short.

At first glance I thought we were talking about Wil Cordero, I thought he was still on the DL with that tanning bed issue. A ton of money, but everyone in MLB is raking in the dough. He might be 32 but he is a "closer", not a relief pitcher closing, this can only make the bullpen stronger by giving them more defined roles. Weathers, Burton, Cordero sounds better than Cormier, Coffey, Weathers.

I am shocked at the fact that Bob C. has given Wayne some tools to work with this offseason. If this is true I would expect there are some other moves close to being finished. Go Reds!!!

Good

86 k's, 18 walks in 63 innings....batting average against .218

Scary

Home: 1.09 ERA in 41 innings

Away: 6.55 ERA in 22 innings

Easy to me.

Cordero = Home Saves

Weathers = Away Saves

I like the Reds being aggressive in the market thus far. The thought of Burton, Weathers, and Cordero, in the 7th, 8th, and 9th sounds good.

One particular concern is the length of the contract. A 4 year deal for a 32 year old reliever is an albatross of a contract waiting to happen if the guy suffers an injury or goes Danny Graves on someone. If it were a three year deal, I would be tickled pink.

Another show is going to drop somewhere. I think Freel will be shipped for someone. Who knows about Hamilton, and I don't think the Reds can get rid of Griffey. They need another serviceable starting arm or two.

What are we looking at rotation wise?

Harang

Arroyo

Bailey

Who else?

TBD

Belisle

Reds are only 1 solid arm away from really contending. With Keppinger they can probably move someone.

I think that either Cueto or Livingston takes that 5th spot. If we are going to contend Belisle has to be a long relief guy outta the bullpen.

Not too fast my friend, It was Belisle's first year as a starter and at times pitched really well. Compare his stats to most other 4th starters and they are pretty good.

Here we go. Contending? Harang is the only solid starter the Reds have. Arroyo is somewhat inconsistent. Bailey? Jury is still out on him. Belisle? Plus you need 5. Not too impressive. The Reds make one nice aquisition and now they're contending. Please. The everyday lineup is still the same. Average defensively, can't hit lefthanders and are perhaps the worst base runners in the league. I know pitching is really the sore spot for the Reds, but if they go with the same schmoes they started last year, .500 is a stretch.

Have we already forgotten how miserable this club has been? For a long time?

Totally agree. Freel/Hamilton could be combined in a deal for serviceable arms. No one will trade for Griffey now when they can have him for a song next season.

I guess if you wanna look at things pessimisticly then that is your opinion. But I like our look on the diamond. Hamilton, assuming he stays has a lot of upside. Keppinger has a lot of upside. If Phillips and E-5 bring their games up even just a tad bit this is a very solid offense. Also have a lot of flexibility on the diamond with Kepp, Gonzo, Phillips, Hopper and Hatte.

Our pitching situation is not as horrid as it was in the past. Harang and Arroyo should be good for 30 combined wins. Bailey and Belisle can win 10-15 games each. We don't know who the other starter is. Maybe we spend some more money and bring in a good arm. The Reds will have a lot to spend on an arm come next year with Griffeys contract going (I believe it's up at least). Maybe we spend early.

Cordero should help the worst bullpen in the league.

You gotta hope they turn things around. I bet Diamondback fans weren't expecting a playoff team either last year.

Someone isn't as new as it may seem... :sssh:

Do you think we were the only ones using that nickname?

My dad has a friend who from there softball days they still call him E5.

Do you think we were the only ones calling him that?

Yes. I have never seen it anywhere else...
